Chapter 15

Selene was glad Arun didn’t question her further about her parents as they walked to the cabin. She really didn’t want to talk about them, especially not with him. Well, maybe a small part of her did.

For some strange reason, she wanted to tell him everything about her, and she wanted to find out all there was to know about him. Unfortunately, there were parts of her life that she couldn’t tell him, and she didn’t want to lie to him, either. So, it was easier not to say anything at all.

Dawn was creeping closer to the horizon when they finally spotted the cabin through the woods. Selene was beyond exhausted and ready to collapse on the floor any second, so the old run-down cabin was a welcome sight.

She was too tired to even care when her stomach decided to start rumbling. She knew food would help with her energy levels, but there was no way she was eating anything before getting some rest. And she certainly wasn’t answering any questions, either. Arun could moan about it all he wanted to, but she wasn’t going to budge.

“Looks like we’ve made it just in time,” Arun said.

Selene frowned. “What do you mean?”

He pointed at the thick, dark clouds rolling over the mountain as it headed their way.

“There’s going to be a storm, and soon by the looks of it,” he said.

Great! Just, great!

From the look of the clouds, it was going to be one hell of a storm. Knowing her run of luck, she would be stuck in the cabin with him until it passed. Which meant, they could be there for a couple of hours, at least. At worse, it could be a couple of weeks.

The upside to living so far north was the lack of people, the downside was the weather. It was so unpredictable. The sunny days were far and few between, but even then, a storm could suddenly hit out of nowhere.

It was hard to tell how long a storm would last. Some lasted only a few hours, but some could last for weeks.

“Don’t worry,” he said, reading her expression wrong. “I’ll make sure we don’t go without food or water.”

That hadn’t even entered her mind. She should have been concerned about that, and she would have been, if it hadn’t been for Arun. She couldn’t stop thinking about him. No matter what she tried, her mind kept going back to him, but she wasn’t about to tell him.

“I wasn’t worried about that,” she said. “I don’t have time to be stuck in a cabin for days or weeks on end. I have important business to take care of.”

“You’re going to tell me what that is first though, aren’t you?”

“Yes, yes,” she said, waving away his words. “But not until after I’ve caught up on some sleep. I’m exhausted.”

She proved her point by covering a yawn with the back of her hand.

“Eat first.”

“How about, fuck off,” she told him. “I’ll do what I want first.”

Arun held up his hands. “I’m only trying to look out for you.”

“Yeah, well, stop it,” she snapped. “It’s creeping me out.”

Arun frowned. “Why would that creep you out?”

Was he serious? When had his kind ever done anything nice for her? In fact, when was the last timehedid something nice for her kind? And she wasn’t talking about killing them quickly, because that wasn’t being nice.

The answer to both was never. His kind only brought pain and suffering. They wouldn’t know how to do something nice for anyone else, even if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.

“Just… forget it.” She yawned again. “I’m too tired to explain shit to you, and you probably wouldn’t understand, anyway.”

“Okay, get some rest,” he agreed. “I’ll make sure there’s some food ready for when you wake up. Then we’ll talk.”

“Yes, sir,” Selene said sarcastically.

She didn’t need his permission. She was going to sleep, whether he liked it or not. She was tired before the damned Vampires had attacked their camp, but it really kicked in when they reach the river. Since then, she had been dragging her feet.
