Chapter 13

Arun was hiding something. Selene didn’t know what it was, but she had a feeling it might have something to do with his friends.

If he was trying to hide the fact that they were off hunting her kind, then he needn’t have bothered. She wasn’t stupid, she knew they were probably doing exactly that. If she was successful in completing her mission, they wouldn’t be hunting her kind for much longer, anyway.

As much as she wanted to know what he was keeping from her, she didn’t push him for answers. In fact, they barely spoke for the rest of the day, which suited her just fine.

She was trying to figure out the best way to tell him what she was doing, and why. Unfortunately, she was still no closer to an answer by the time they stopped for the night.

“We’ll make camp here,” he said when they came to a clearing in the trees.

“I told you we wouldn’t reach it in one day,” she said, smugly.

Arun raised his eyebrows at her. “Maybe not, but at least we’ve covered most of the distance.”

“Fine,” Selene grimaced. “You win.”

“It’s not about winning, Selene,” Arun said in his deep, sexy voice. “It’s about keeping you alive.”

There was no chance of that. She was going to die. It was only a matter of time before somebody caught up with her and killed her because of what she was trying to accomplish.

She was being hunted by all the creatures in the realm, and every single one of them wanted her dead.

Except for Arun, the sexy fae!Her mind threw at her.Oh, shut up!She threw back.

“What? No snarky comeback?” he asked.

Selene glared at him before turning her back and walking away.

The clearing he’d picked wasn’t massive, but it was big enough for them to have a small fire going. And as an added bonus, there was plenty of firewood lying around.

Sleeping, on the other hand, could be a bit of a problem. There wasn’t much floor space, and it was uneven, with bits of tree roots and rocks sticking out of the ground. Once a fire was going, there would be even less space.

Selene walked over to a large tree truck that was lying on its side and leaned against it. It was obvious from the thick dirt still clinging to the exposed roots that it was taken down in a recent storm.

“Wait here. I’ll be back in a minute,” Arun told her.

“Yes, sir.” She saluted. “Anything you say, sir. Can I at least sit down, sir?”

Arun frowned and shook his head, but he didn’t say a word. Selene grinned when he turned around and walked away with a look of confusion on his face.

She didn’t know why, but she was having fun trying to wind him up. She knew it was a dangerous game, but she wanted to see how far she could push him before he snapped.

So far, he’d shown barely any emotion. The couple of times she’d managed to get a reaction out of him, it had been so fleeting, she wasn’t sure if she’d been seeing things.

When he returned a few minutes later, he was carrying more firewood. Not that they needed it. There was plenty lying around already.

Selene was more than happy to sit back and watch him get the fire going. And once it was going, Arun disappeared again, only to return a few minutes later with another delicious rabbit hanging from his hand.

She had to admit, he was a good cook. She enjoyed the rabbit he’d cooked for them the night before, so she was more than happy to let him cook dinner again.

Arun quickly set about preparing their meal. His hands moved deftly as he skinned and boned the little creature. Before long, the scent of rabbit filled the air, making her mouth water.

“How do you find the rabbits so easily?” she asked. “It takes me days, if not weeks, to find and catch a rabbit. I have to set traps and everything.”

“Years of practice.”

Arun grinned at her, and it was the sexiest thing she’d ever seen in her life. Her body instantly reacted to the sight of him. Her blood heated up as it raced through her veins and her heart skipped a beat. She refused to acknowledge what it did to the lower part of her body.
