Chapter 18

Arun felt bad for Selene. He could tell she was disappointed, and he couldn’t blame her. To find out she had spent all that time on a spell that was never going to work, must be hard.

It made him wonder about the spell she was looking for. Was it real? If so, would it work? Or was it going to be another dud? They wouldn’t find out the answer to that until they had the spell in their hands.

But first, he wanted to know how she found out about the spell. He also wanted to know where she found the locating spell. He might be able to know if the spell she was looking for was legit if he knew where she got her information from.

As much as he wanted to know, he didn’t question her about it straight away. He waited until she’d had plenty of time to digest the news and have something to eat before bringing up the topic again.

“I’m sorry about the spell,” he said honestly.

“It’s not your fault.”

She sounded so downtrodden. Arun wanted to pull her into his arms and tell her that everything would be okay, but he didn’t. She probably wouldn’t welcome his touch, so he kept his hands to himself.

Arun didn’t tell her that everything would be okay, because he honestly didn’t know if it would be. He didn’t want to lie to her, so he said nothing.

At that moment in time, he felt useless.

“I can’t believe I’ve wasted so much time on a spell that was never going to work,” she shook her head. “I don’t have time to search the entire fucking planet!”

“I can help you,” Arun offered. “I just need to know a few details first.”

Selene frowned. “Why would you help me?”

“Why not?”

“Well, for starters, I’m looking for a spell to get rid of your kind,” she said.

“Yes, I know.” It wasn’t something he could forget easily. “But it’s not like you’re planning on killing us all.”

Selene raised her eyebrows and grimaced. “I’m not that type of person.”

He knew it was a dig at what he and his friends had been doing, but he didn’t rise to the bait. After all, she was right, he had done that to her kind.

“I only kill those who seek to kill me,” she continued. “But no, I don’t plan on harming anyone. The reason I was looking for the spell was so that all the death and destruction could come to an end. Peacefully.”

“And that’s why I’m helping you,” he told her.

Selene looked doubtful, but she didn’t call him a liar.

“What do you need to know?” she asked instead.

“Where did you find the locating spell?”

“In a library.”

“There are a lot of libraries…”

“I know,” she interrupted.

“Can you be more specific?” he asked. “Like where it was? Or what it was called?”

He knew Humans used to name their libraries, so even a name would be helpful.

“It was a big library with one large room and a couple of little rooms,” she shrugged. “Other than that, I can’t tell you much about it. The name of the building was destroyed years ago.”

“Can you show me where it is?”
