Adrien

Jenna has been quiet all week, and it’s starting to make me feel nervous. She has been walking around on eggshells the last day or so and, well, it’s not usually her style. She’s usually way more direct about stuff.

When I need to be pulled up on something, especially.

Of course, she doesn’t know I lied to Sara.

Nobody really does except Bryan.

I’m lying on the couch in my office, which I nearly fell asleep on last night. Not done that in a while. When Jenna pops her head in.

“Oh,” she jumps when she sees me.

“Susan Jones is on the phone. She said she needs to speak to you. Said it was urgent.”

“Ok, put her through.”

I stand and sit behind my desk to take the call.

“Hi Susan, is everything going okay down there?”

“Hi Adrien. Mostly yeah. We’ve had a couple of staffing issues, but I think we’ve managed to get them sorted. I’m actually calling you about Sara.”

I sit up straighter in my chair. If I wasn’t already on edge I am now.

“Adrien, are you there?” She asks.

“Yeah, I am. What's the problem?”

“Well, Sara’s team that she brought with her, they’re not really giving us what we want. What we’re used to.”

“Ok.”

“Some of the plans she has don’t seem like they necessarily work on brand for what we’re doing now.”

“Susan, I’m going to stop you right there.”

Adrien do not lose your shit over this.

“Look, Sara Raine has been brought in to mix things up a bit. It’s her department and, she can run it how she sees fit.”

“But Adrien. I don’t think she knows what she’s talking about. I mean I’m sure she’s good at her job, but do you really think she’s capable of running the whole department? Alex seems to be a good fit though.”

Is she for real?

“Ok Susan.” I know I have a tone in my voice now.

But I don't like what she implies about Sara, and I know Sara wouldn't want me to go in too hot.

“I’m going to say this once and only once. Sara is not only capable of running the department she also has some great ideas to move the brand to be a more diverse brand. If you think anything she says hasn’t already had my eyes on it at least once then frankly you’re delusional.”

I hear her trying to get a word in, but I’m on a roll, and frankly, I don’t give a shit.

“Sara not only deserves this job, she worked damn hard the last few years to get to this job. Not sure if you know this, but given the difference between me and her getting a promotion going a different way, she could be the one sitting in this seat right now. She’s more than good at her job. If this is something you have a problem with, then I’ll expect your resignation and some names for your replacement.”

“Adrien. Look.”

“Susan. I mean it. Do not push me on this.”
