Medic’s lips thin. “The tox report says it was a mixture of cocaine and heroin. She’s incredibly lucky, Torque. That mixture alone is enough to kill most with a smaller amount.”

“What about recovery?” King asks. “Will she be addicted?”

“It’s highly probable,” he says honestly. “Both those things arehighlyaddictive. We gave her antibiotics, an IV to hopefully help flush out her system, and other things to help combat it and any possible infections, but that only goes so far. Normally once someone gets a taste for it, they can become instantly addicted, but since she didn’t inject it into herself, then she might be able to fight the urge. You’re going to have to keep a close eye on her once she’s back up and moving around,” he tells me seriously.

I nod. The idea of Izzy struggling with addiction scares me, but I’ll help her get through it. No matter what.

“We’ll help,” Sage says calmly. Everyone agrees.

Medic smiles. “I know. Now, I need to get back in there and fill out my reports. I’ll send out a nurse as soon as she’s moved.”

“Thank you, brother,” I say gratefully, reaching out and clamping my hand on his shoulder. “Thank you.”

“She’s strong, brother,” he reiterates to me. “She’ll be stronger knowing her man and family are here waiting for her.” Then he turns and heads off.

I sag against the wall in relief. “Thank God,” I whisper. I jolt when I feel arms wrap around me. I look up in surprise to see Sage hugging me. I glance at my brother, but he smiles softly at me. I hug Sage back, grateful. I guess I need it more than I realize.

When they finally come out and allow me to go back, I brace myself. Mom and Dad are quietly following behind me, but I only have eyes for Izzy. When I walk into her hospital room, my heart jerks in my chest at the sight of her laying there, hooked up to so many wires and machines. The only comfort is that I can see and hear her heartbeat on the monitor, and the gentle rise and fall of her chest as she breathes on her own.

I move carefully to the side of the bed, and take her hand gently in mine. “Hey, baby,” I whisper, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “I need you to open your eyes for me soon, Izzy. Show me those beautiful baby blues and let me tell you how much I love you.”

She doesn’t stir, but I don’t let go. I’m staying right here until she wakes up.

Mom is on the other side of her, holding her other hand and looking relieved. “I’ll stay with you tonight,” Mom says to me.

“You don’t have to.”

“I’m staying,” Mom says fiercely, and the look in her eyes tells me I better rethink arguing with her.

“I’m going to post a guard on the door,” Dad tells me quietly. “One of your brothers or Sniper. I don’t trust anyone else at the moment while Shadow and Viper are investigating.”

“You’ll let me know?” I say, looking at him.

Dad nods. “You focus on your woman, son, and I’ll focus on finding out how this son of a bitch got into our house.”

“When you do, make sure you make them bleed,” Mom says softly, no inflection in her voice. But the glint in her eyes tells me that she will gladly help with that if needed. “They need to pay for hurting our girl.” I wholeheartedly agree. “What about her former boss?” Mom suddenly asks. “Isn’t he supposed to be here tomorrow?”

I curse. I forgot all about him. Dad looks at me in question and I briefly explain about Zeb. “He’s definitely going to kick my ass when he hears about this,” I sigh.

“Leave it to me,” Dad says. “You focus on your girl.” He looks at Mom. “Don’t overdo it, woman. And I’ll be back to get you if you need a break.”

“I’ll be fine,” Mom promises him. She leans over to give him a quick kiss. “Now go find that son of a bitch so I can sleep better knowing justice has been served.”
