FORTY-FIVE
IZZY
Nothing like almost dying to give you some clarity.
The first thing that registers is the beeping. It’s loud and annoying and I wish someone would turn it the hell down. When it doesn’t quiet, I groan, and slowly open my eyes. I’m going to give Torque a piece of my mind for letting the damn thing go on and on.
When I open my eyes, I’m confused when I realize I’m not at the clubhouse. My brain is fuzzy, so I can’t figure out where I am until I slowly turn my head and see IV’s and wires all over my arm and hand. I turn my head further and see Torque and Rose both sound asleep in chairs by the window a few feet away.
Rose’s head is on Torque’s shoulder, and he’s slumped in the chair, his cheek on top of her head. Judging by the light behind them it’s still very early. I turn my head the other way and take in what I now recognize is a hospital room.
I try to figure out how I got here. I remember eating dinner last night, and then going up to bed. Grabbing my pajamas and going into Torque’s room.
It hits me all at once and my heart speeds up, making the heart monitor beep faster. I take a deep breath, trying to calm my speeding heart and not wake Torque or Rose.
The man in Torque’s room. I remember now. He was waiting for me. He injected me with something. I reach up carefully to my neck, but don’t feel anything other than a small bandage. I take quick stock of myself and realize that I’m able to move all my appendages, and I mostly feel tired and have a wicked headache.
Better than being dead, I think to myself wryly.
The curtain around the bed is pulled back and I look over as Medic comes walking in, and smiles softly when he sees me. “I see you’re finally awake,” he says warmly, grabbing my chart at the end of the bed.
The noise has Torque and Rose both bolting upright, and I turn my head to look at them. Torque’s eyes land on mine and he’s moving quickly. “Hey, baby,” he murmurs, cupping my face and giving me a relieved smile. “How you feeling?”
“Tired,” I say honestly, leaning into his hand.
“That’s normal,” Medic says as he comes towards the top of the bed. “You were injected with a large amount of drugs, Izzy,” he tells me seriously, “but thankfully Rose found you quick enough we were able to counteract it in time before it did any serious damage. I’m going to run a few tests with you, okay, just to see where you’re at.”
“I’ll step out,” Rose says, coming forward and nudging Torque out of the way to kiss my cheek. “So glad to see you awake, baby girl,” she whispers, eyes wet.
“Thank you, Rose,” I whisper gratefully, holding her hand tight.
“You’re family, honey, and we take care of family,” Rose promises, squeezing my hand right back. Then she pulls away and heads out of the room. I catch a glimpse of Stone outside, which tells me that a few of the MC guys are around. I don’t know why, but it warms me to know they’re here.
Medic runs a few tests, and by the time we’re done, I’m even more exhausted. “ From what I see you’re going to make a full recovery,” he says happily as I slump back. Torque is standing by the top of the bed, and he instantly puts his hand on my head and starts to massage it gently. I give a soft sigh of contentment. Medic chuckles. “I know, you’re tired, Izzy, so I’m going to head out. The only other thing I want to do is a scan of your brain to make sure everything looks good, but from what I can tell, you should be good to go. But that won’t be until later today, so you can get some rest.”
“Okay,” I say softly. “Thanks, Medic.”
“You’re welcome, honey,” he says with a smile. “I’ll see you a little later.”
Once he’s gone, I open my eyes when Torque sits on the side of my bed. We look at each other for a couple of quiet moments, and then I say in barely a whisper, “I thought I was going to die, Torque” Emotion chokes me and my eyes water.
“Shhh, baby,” he whispers, quickly lowering the bed rail and moving next to me, pulling me close. “You’re safe,” he murmurs as he carefully rocks me. “Scared the shit out of me when Mom screamed for me, but knowing you’re okay is the only thing that matters.”
I quietly cry against him. “I was so scared.”
“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry I didn’t protect you,” he whispers, voice cracking.
“It’s not your fault,” I sob. “It’s mine. I should have known. I saw the open window and that should have been my first clue. You never leave the window open.”
He shushes me. “There’s no point in replaying it over and over again. We’re going to find that asshole, I promise,” he vows.
I believe him. If anyone can, it’s him and the club. We’re quiet as we hold each other, and finally, I work up the courage to tell him, “I love you, Torque. I know it’s soon, but…”
He shuts me up by putting his mouth over mine. He kisses me softly, like he’s afraid he’ll break me if he presses any harder. When he finally pulls away, he presses his forehead to mine. “I love you too, Izzy. The only thing I could think as we came here was that I needed to tell you I love you. I don’t give a rat’s ass that we’ve only been dating for all of two days, but when you know something, you don’t question it.”
I agree with him. “You were the only thing I thought of before I passed out,” I tell him. “I wanted to cry out for you, but I couldn’t make a sound. It was a moment of clarity.”
He kisses me again. “I’ll always be here for you, Izzy. I promise.”
