THIRTY-FOUR

TORQUE

I want Izzy to know she’s mine, and I’m more than happy to show it to her.

We finish watching the security camera footage Cryos has put up on the large screen in our Church room. Anger floods me all over again as I watch Carson fall to the floor. He smacked his head pretty good, so I won’t be surprised if he’s got a concussion too.

“Fucker is going to pay,” Hulk rumbles, anger tinging his voice.

There’s a few murmurs of agreement. It’s pretty easy to see that everyone likes Carson, and there’s no way we’re going to let this stand.

“I pulled up the cameras around the area, but none of them caught the asshole,” Cryos announces, face grim. “Though I did notice an anomaly in the camera feed of the building where they were waiting.” We all perk up at that. He plays the video and I realize something pretty quickly.

“It’s on a loop,” I blurt out. “Son of a bitch.”

Cryos nods. “Whoever was up there knows there are cameras and didn’t want to be seen.”

“But wouldn’t another camera have caught them in the area?” Shadow asks, frowning.

“That’s the thing. When I look at the surrounding cameras, there’s no one on the streets in the area.”

“How the hell does that make sense?” King demands. “This asshole isn’t a damn ghost.”

“Possible they were walking around in a disguise and changed in or on top of the building,” I say, narrowing my eyes at the feed of the rooftop in front of me.

“Possible,” Cryos says. “There’s all kinds of alleys around there, and it’s possible to move between them, but I think there’s something else going on. I did some research, and many governments, including our own, are building devices that disrupt cameras, even from a long range.”

“And you think whoever this is has access to something like that,” Shadow summarizes, eyes dark and thoughtful.

Cryos nods. “There’s been chat on the dark web about things like that hitting the black market. Not sure how well the technology is, but all this person needs is a few seconds, just long enough to be out of the camera’s range.”

“It’s like something out of a science fiction movie,” Dagger remarks with a shake of his head. “But it’s not far off to think the Russians have access to it. They’ve got their fingers in everything else.”

He has a point. “I agree with Dagger. This could also explain why we’re not seeing them doing their dirty work around town. If they have access to this technology, they have the ability of staying off not only our radar, but the cops and the government,” I say, a buzz starting to build in my veins.

“My thoughts exactly,” Dad says, looking at Cryos. “And there’s probably no way to track or find out if they do?”

Cryos shakes his head. “They’re not doing this through official channels, so there’s no way to track it. But Torque is right. I think this is how they’re staying off our radar. It’s genius, really,” he admits with reluctant admiration.

“So how do we counteract that and catch these assholes?” Dad asks in frustration. “We don’t have the manpower to have people on every street corner, watching and waiting.”

“I’ve got a feed going twenty-four seven on Volos garage to see if anyone going in or out,” Cryos explains. “The only way to tell if they’re looping or jamming the feed would be to stake the place out, so I can see in real time if their movements match up with what’s on camera.”

Dad slowly nods his head. He looks at Shadow. “You guys up for that?” he asks.

“Consider it done,” Shadow answers, and I don’t miss the anticipation in his gaze. He’s hoping to catch these assholes, and if he can grab one of them, he will.

“I’ll join you,” Viper volunteers.

Looks like the big guns are coming out.

“Any update on Carson?” I ask Dad before he bangs the gavel to end Church.

“Stone texted and said he’ll be discharged soon. They stitched him up, shot him full of pain meds and antibiotics, and said he has a mild concussion,” Dad answers with a shake of his head. “Should have known that kid would have a head harder than a rock.”

We all chuckle. Still, I’m relieved he’s going to be alright.

Our meeting is over and we all file out, but unlike most times where we’re laughing and ready to party, this time, we’re subdued. Shadow and Viper head out and everyone else scatters. A few head to their rooms, some head to pool tables and dart boards, and in the case of King and Dad, they grab their women.
