I stare at her for a moment and then I look back at Izzy, a warm feeling filling my chest. “I was just thinking about getting the prospects to do that when we get back to the clubhouse,” I say quietly.
“Izzy’s what I like to call strong willed and resourceful,” Mom murmurs approvingly. “She’s rattled, but she’s strong. You picked a good one, my boy.”
“Not sure she wants to keep me, Mom, so don’t go planning anything,” I warn her.
She rolls her eyes. “I’m not Leonora with her love of a big fancy wedding. Just a small ceremony at the clubhouse is fine with me,” she teases with a wink.
At least, I think she’s teasing. It’s hard to know with her. She’d love nothing more than all of us to settle down and give her a bunch of grandbabies to spoil.
When Izzy hangs up, I move around the desk, turn her chair, and kiss her. I don’t know what it is about this woman, but I want my mouth on hers as often as possible. I don’t know if I’m addicted, but hell, I’ll take this kind of addiction over anything else. When I pull away she stares up at me in shock. “What was that for?”
“Can’t I kiss you for no reason?”
She arches a brow. “Not in front of your mother,” she says, but her lips twitch when Mom snorts. “I only have two more people to call. I rescheduled everyone the day after tomorrow since I figure with everything you probably wouldn’t want to open.” She pauses. “Shit, that might have been presumptuous.”
“No, you’re right,” I tell her. “Gives us time to get everything figured out on our end. Everyone okay with rebooking?”
“I explained the circumstances, leaving out the whole mob part of course, and they were fine. None of them were urgent so they’re fine to be put off for another couple of days.”
“Good. Finish up the last two calls since you’re already on a roll and then we’re heading to the clubhouse. You and Mom are going to be riding in a cage with one of the prospects.”
“A cage?” she asks in confusion.
“A car,” I clarify. “We call them cages since you’re all closed in.”
“Which prospect?” Mom asks.
“Norris. He should get here shortly. Once you guys are on your way, we’ll follow.”
“I’ll be quick and then we can go,” Izzy assures me, picking up the phone.
Mom tilts her head, signalling me to follow her out. We walk out into the hallway and down to the reception desk. “She wants to leave, but I think I’ve convinced her to stay,” Mom tells me quietly, voice grave.
I curse quietly. “I’ll talk to her.”
“Torque,” Mom warns, giving me a serious look. “I like her, and I like her for you. She’s what you need, but she is not like any other woman you’ve been with. You can’t order her to stay and expect it to work for you. If you want her to stay, you need to make sure she knows it’s for the right reasons, and it’s because you want her to stay, not because of the club’s protection. So if you’re not serious about her, then you need to figure that out and fast.”
“She’s mine, Mom. I just need her to give me a chance. A real chance, not just the two of us spending a bunch of time in bed.”
“Then you need to be upfront and frank with her. I can help a bit by talking you up, but this is going to rest on your shoulders. You need to be the one to convince her that she needs you just as much as you need her. That we’re the family she’s always wanted.”
