Chapter 15
Absolutely Breathtaking
Katie's POV
I sat down on my bed as I cried my heart out. Everyone knows you only celebrate your eighteenth birthday once, but mine was completely ruined. To make things worse, I'm pretty sure Dylan or Alexander is my mate. Maybe it was one of those alphas? Why must one of them be my mate!? I grabbed my pillow and screamed into it as I cried harder. I didn’t care that I was being a baby, I didn’t have my mother for today and now pack issues ruined it.
Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door. I looked down at my soaked pillow and tossed it down on my bed as I got up. I was still in my dress as I didn’t feel like changing at the time. I wiped my face and took a deep breath to compose myself before I opened the door. What if this was Dylan? Or maybe one of the others? I shook the thoughts from my head, it was as if I was obsessed with who could be my mate. What is wrong with me? I opened the door slowly and saw Alexander, he was covered in sweat. What the hell has he been doing?
"Alexander wh-" He pushed his way into the room and looked over near the crimson couch by my balcony. Alexander locked the door on the balcony and moved to my bedroom door.
"Excuse me?" I looked at him completely confused. Alexander has never just waltzed into my room like this. He wasn’t thinking correctly, and something had to be wrong. Yet it felt something was wrong with me as I had started to burn up, almost feverish. Am I sick? Alexander stood up and his eyes locked on me. I stood there frozen in place as he zoned out.
"Alexander!" I yelled his name and it snapped him from whatever trance he was in.
"Katie." He spoke softly. There was a hint of affection and love in the way he spoke to me. He moved closer, not breaking eye contact. With every step he took, I stepped backward until my back touched the wall. My heart pounded, and I couldn't tell if it was from fear or excitement. What's going on here? Why is Alexander moving towards me and not speaking? He stopped just inches from me, mixed emotions on his face, and his breathing fast.
"Ale-" I tried to say his name, but he pressed one finger against my lips. Oh no, panic rose in my chest. Could this be something else other than panic or fear? I feel as though I would pass out as my eyes widened.
Alexander had removed his finger and leaned in; his lips looked so soft and inviting. It felt as if I was melting as he kissed me, his lips were so soft and wet. I was so lost in our long kiss that when he grabbed both my wrists and placed them over my head, I didn’t care. My body arched forward against his. An exhilarated heat took over. One of his hands let go of my wrists and slid down my side to my waist. Was this going to happen? It was as if I was caught in a fight or flight reflex as all my senses were tuned into what he was doing. I couldn’t smell or hear anything but him. Not even the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears could distract me.
Alexander let his hand drift down to my thigh. An amazing feeling took over. Did I want him, is that what this feeling was? Is this ok even when I don’t know who my mate truly is? Panic took over as the enjoyment faded. I didn’t know who my mate was and here I am about to possibly sleep with my best friend. I questioned myself and was about to attempt to wiggle my hands free as I heard Dylan calling out to me.
Alexander’s hand was now on the inside of my thigh and his grip tightened. The door was rammed open with enough force to crack it. Dylan rushed inside straight at Alexander and me.
"Get the hell off her!" He growled and pushed Alexander away from me. Alexander snapped out of whatever trance he was in and shook his head.
"Katie, I-I’m sorry” He tried to explain but Dylan slammed him into my bookshelf which caused books to rain down. Alexander growled and shoved Dylan to get free.
"I honestly couldn't control myself. You’re just so enticing. It’s because you’re finally eighteen." Alexander said as he left the room. His face was a mix of horror and heartbreak. I don’t know what hurt worse, Alexander leaving or this being my fault.
Dylan's POV
“You know you’re only attracted to her because she’s basically in heat now right?” Jace’s words echoed in my mind as I hastened upstairs. I made it to the third floor when chills ran down my spine. What if he was right and I only wanted Katie due to the fact she seemed alluring? I froze dead in my tracks and forced myself to turn back.
The halls were quiet and long. It felt like it would take forever to reach the first floor like a walk of shame, a shame that I wanted her for the wrong reasons. Shame that she may not truly be my mate. As I reached the first floor, it was clear chaos had taken place. People were pinned against the wall and others were running. My father ran to me and stopped me from going anywhere. He grabbed a hold of my wrist and yanked me aside near the alpha’s office.
Terror. The look of terror was painted across his face. I’d never seen my father so scared in his life. It was as if he feared even breathing.
"The alpha of Eight Moons Pack threatened Damian and even Katie. He said he would kill Damian to take Katie as his own." My father told me in a whisper. He didn’t want what took place to be heard and hoped the chaos would cover his hushed voice. Nothing could suppress the growl that escaped me. No one would take Katie, granted I didn’t care much about Damian, but Katie did. They were off-limits, and I would gladly die to keep Katie safe. This is not good.
Fur, that was all I saw as Alexander bolted from the alpha’s office and outside. The look in his eyes even had chills jolt down my spine. Murder. Bloodlust. Something extremely fierce as if he would burn the world down. I’m sure he was headed after that alpha and his men. Even if to just chase them off the territory. That look, however, I’ll never forget that look on Alexander’s face.
My father was still talking yet I tuned him out for a brief moment. I was hoping if I focused, I would pick up on everything that had gone on. This could be a full-blown war if alphas didn’t play their cards right. This situation needed to be defused quickly. I needed to get to Katie, as long as I had eyes on her I could protect her. I tried to leave my very panicked father and it failed.
"Dylan, where are you trying to rush off to!?" My father grabbed my arm and pulled me back to him. Damnit dad just let me go. I’m an adult and can find for myself I huffed.
"I'm trying to get to Katie!" I shouted at him.
"You don't even know her. We need to warn our old members what is to come." My father warned me, but I just didn't care.
I didn’t care that I barely knew her. From the moment I saw her I knew she was mine and I refuse to let anything happen to a single hair on her head.
"Father, I think she is my mate." My father stood there unable to find the words to even say to me. Had he never expected for me to possibly find my mate here? Of course, he didn’t. He simply wanted protection at the cost of his son.
“Are you sure she’s your mate?” He questioned as if a part of him hoped she wouldn’t be.
“I’m not sure. I feel like she is, but I was told this feeling may just be because she’s now fully mature.” The doubt in my own voice echoed in my eyes.
