Chapter 10
What Ifs Pt2
Katie's POV
I'm an idiot, I thought to myself. Why would I say that? I would even hit send. I shouldn’t have asked what would happen if he isn’t my mate, he likes me. I sighed. Sure, the thought has crossed my mind, but I don't understand why I even brought it up. I’ve been scared this entire time. I’ve been upset and against this entire marriage since I found out. Still, that didn’t mean I needed to go out of my way to cause issues with Dylan just because I’m unhappy about being married off.
I heard a door slam and angry footsteps. What was that? Something was going on here. It sounded like someone was severely pissed. Was it Dylan? I rushed to my door to listen yet there was nothing in the hallway. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The silence was cut short due to growls emitting from outside.
I rushed toward my balcony to see what the commotion was, and who it was. Before I could make it to the railing I heard them, Dylan and Alexander. I stood there shocked in terror. My heart was breaking as I stood there looking down at them. I was completely frozen on my balcony as they were fighting. Dylan looked up; his icy blue eyes pierced through me. Something felt different this time as he looked at me. I turn eighteen in a week and these two would be the death of me.
I take a step back in realization. This is my fault. I caused this. I cried and ran out of my room. Pack members rushed outside to watch as I made it to the door. I must hurry before someone is badly hurt or worse killed. I see my father with a wicked grin on his face as he peeked out of the cracked open door. What is wrong with him? Why hadn’t he stopped them? He sees me and quickly grabs my arm hard.
"Katie, he wanted to cause problems with Alexander. He needs to learn his place." I was taken back by my father's words. Sure, a beta is supposed to put members in their place, but this is an alpha's son he is going after. The guy I'm supposed to marry to complete the pack merger.
I didn’t fully believe my father because I doubt Dylan openly started this. I tried to get away from my father and he tightened his grip, he would leave a bruise at this rate. I wince at the pain he caused, and this made my father let go. He looked and saw the bruise he had left on my arm starting to form on my pasty white skin. I stared at him as he looked at me shocked that he caused a bruise so easily. This was my chance; I turned and ran outside.
I ran between them as I hoped they would simply just stop the fight. Alexander was in the air by the time I reached them. There was nothing he could do as gravity pulled him down. I stood in front of Dylan which is where Alexander would have landed to attack. Oh god, I shake as I knew what would happen. Alexander would attack me instead. I shut my eyes in an attempt to not watch the unintentional attack on me. Nothing happened. Opening my eyes, I see two wolves before me on the ground. Dylan had shifted and slammed into Alexander to keep me safe. Alexander's eyes were full of shock and fear. I looked at him as he stood there frozen at the thought of what could have just happened to me.
"Stop!" I scream at the top of my lungs at them. I can't take this anymore; they were both hurt because of me. Alexander shifted back. His wounds are starting to heal but he is bloody. He ran to me and threw his arms around me. I pushed him off me in complete disgust. I've never felt disgusted toward Alexander but after what I just saw I can't be near him.
"Alex, how could you-" I said to him as I cried. He was a broken bloody mess standing before me. I haven't called him Alex since I was little. It had always been Alexander since my mother died.
I turn to try and go to Dylan. I want to be by him, but he isn't there. I looked towards the woods and caught a glimpse of him as he ran away from the mansion. The burning in my eyes and pounding in my head were almost too much to bear. I’ve cried so much that I wanted to vomit due to the oncoming migraine. My heart was being pulled in so many directions I didn’t know what to do anymore. Alex looked at me and saw the slight bruise on my arm. He growled some and more than likely thought it was due to Dylan. Sadly, that was not the case, my father had once again hurt me.
I turned and saw everyone was watching what had just taken place. Both pack's members stood there and stared. No one dared move because no one knew whose side to be on. This could cause an all-out fight if no one dispersed the crowd. I growled at everyone, I was furious at myself, and I let that anger show. I wanted everyone away from me, away from this area where blood stained the ground.
"Why?" I looked to Alexander as tears escaped my teal eyes. "Why did you do this?"
He stared at me as if he wasn’t sure exactly what to say. He could tell my heart was broken, that I was hurt. What he doesn't know is it's broken for more than one reason. My father hurt me again. My best friend had fought the guy I'm supposed to marry in a few days. Dylan ran from me; he ran away unable to even face me. I had started getting to know him and then this happened.
"Katie, I'm sorry." Alexander said to me his voice broke as he looked at me with nothing but sadness in his eyes. Why the fuck was he sad? He walked toward me and lightly grabbed my bruised arm and stared at it, fury spread from ear to ear.
"Did Dylan do this to you?" I shook my head no; I didn’t know if my father was still at the front door. He looked at me with rage and sadness in his eyes, he knew.
“You’re father?” Alexander didn't even have to see my father do it, yet he knew. How did he know? Because Alexander knew me well enough to know I wouldn’t lie about who hit me. My silence was everything he needed to hear after I told him it was not Dylan.
"I'm fine Alexander." I quietly told him in case anyone was nearby. Alexander yanked me against his chest and held me there. He was so warm; he was so safe. Every time I was in his arms I felt nothing could ever harm me.
"I should have been there to protect you. I shouldn’t have even bothered with Dylan. Everyone knows I’m not weak and yet that punk had to smart off. I’m sorry Katie but while I wish I was with you lessons must still be taught.” His words rolled off his tongue effortlessly. He's sorry but is holding his position on what happened between him and Dylan.
I exhaled angrily and walked away from him. I needed to be away from Alexander to clear my head. That’s when it happened, I stumbled and fell to the ground. That damn hole had done it again. I looked down and saw a cut running down my ankle. It bled some but it was nothing major. Alexander walked up to me. He's shirtless and holding his shirt in his hand. When did he take his shirt off? He looked down at my ankle and shook his head. He knew I was clumsy, but he also knew the hole didn’t do this. He or Dylan, one of them must have grazed me when they collided in front of me.
"I'm glad he jumped in front of you." Alexander said as he bent down and wrapped his shirt around my ankle to stop the slight bleeding. He knew this was due to their fight and he was right. I'd be dead right now more than likely if Dylan hadn’t got in front of me. I'm not sure I could have shifted fast enough to absorb some of the force behind a collision with Alexander.
I went to thank Alexander and limp back to my room, but he grabbed me and carried me bridal style into the mansion. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of the feeling I get when my skin touches his. Electric sparks rushed through my veins with each touch from Alexander and his scent would forever be intoxicating.
"Alexander, I can walk." I said to him, but he simply held me tighter. He won't put me down nor talk to me. He was just walking through the mansion with a concentrated look on his face. That’s when I realized what he had done. He had reached out to someone telepathically but who? We turned a corner and that was when I realized who Derrick stood there with his medical back and Jace by his side.
"What the fuck happened?" Derrick questioned Alexander. Jace looked down at my ankle then back to Alexander.
"Why is he with you?" Alexander growled at Jace. This caused Jace to take a few steps back in retreat. I was over all of the aggressiveness tonight. I groaned and tried to get down, but Alexander wouldn’t let me.
"He is being trained by me so deal with it Alexander." Derrick stepped forward. He was the only one who could go head-to-head with Alexander and not get beat down. Alexander scoffed at this and threw a glare at Jace. I’m glad Derrick was here because I was so upset, I felt as if I would throw up. It was so late, and I was exhausted. My room was so far away, and Alexander’s warmth soothed me. I was drifting asleep in his arms. What was wrong with me? Alexander explained everything that happened between him and Dylan and my ankle to Derrick and Jace as he laid me down on the bed.
"You did what!?" Jace snapped at Alexander. They were both betas prior to the merge, and Jace was supposed to protect Dylan at all costs. The fury in his eyes was real yet I almost didn’t notice. It was a struggle to fight the heaviness of my eyelids. I knew that I would be tired, but this seemed like a bit much. I had stayed up late countless times before so why was this night even more exhausting than the rest?
"Alexander, she will be eighteen soon. Very soon." Derrick turned to Alexander and then looked down at me. The fight with exhaustion stopped as I gave up. My eyes closed and my mind drifted. It was like I was in and out of sleep barely able to hear them. "Derrick, she will be fully mature soon. As a result, she needs extra rest.” Alexander said as I felt his hand glide through my hair. It was so nice of a feeling every time he did this.
"We should all leave so she can get her rest." Derrick instructed them. Coldness overtook me as Alexander’s hand left my head. It felt like something that always belonged was ripped away. As if his warmth was all I needed in life and without it I would freeze to death. I wasn’t sure why he made me feel this way even in my sleep, but I didn’t care. Between the two of them, I’m closer to Alexander. Maybe it would just be best if Alexander turned out to be my mate and then my father allowed Dylan and his to leave the pack. Dylan saved me but then he ran. He ran like a fucking coward unable to even face me.
