Chapter 6

My Soulmate

Dylan's POV

As we went inside the mansion, walking past the thick black wooden doors, I heard my father gasp. It was beyond stellar. The floors were white marble, the tall white walls were outlined with black baseboards and trim, and there were black shelves spaced out along the walls with a mix of black and crimson décor. To say this place wasn’t breathtaking would be a lie. If there were windows in this area you could bet the sill was black and the curtains crimson. Something about the flow of it all made it seem like you could never get bored with the repetitiveness.

However, the amazing mansion was nothing compared to how Katie looked. She was perfect. Everything about Katie Knight was perfect from what I could tell. That's when I saw it again, I saw him looking at her and I could barely contain my growl. The love, no, the longing in his eyes was sickening. I’ve never been the jealous type until her. I wanted to be the only one that could have her. Who was this man and why was he staring at Katie as if she was all his? He had silverish gray hair and boring green eyes. I couldn't stand the way his eyes were on her as we entered the alpha’s office to discuss rankings. I checked his body and determined that in terms of build, I'm bigger and should be able to take him if I attack him right now. Fuck what my father or her father says, I’ll attack him and take her right in front of them. She's mine whether she knows it yet or not and he will not take her from me. I was growing to hate that man more due to how he looked at Katie.

"Maxwell, take Charlie and lead the new pack members to the training area. I want them all assessed so that we can determine where they will better fit." The Alpha ordered and off went the two men. So, then who was this man with a death wish? Why did he get to stay back just to keep staring at Katie and occasionally the alpha? Rage and jealousy coursed through my veins. I don’t care how crazy it was that I wanted to claim her now. No one would ever have her if I couldn’t.

"Jace, come with us." My father called his beta over. Jace was a skinny wolf that didn't look like much of a threat at all. He had shaggy red hair and copper brown eyes. He would wear sunglasses all the time because he couldn't stand his own eyes. It was one of the things pack members would bully him for since they were so different. That can, he claimed, reminded him too much of his dead mother. Honestly, Jace looked like the nerdy kid who would always get beat up. Yet, he was fast on the battlefield which made him a challenge to fight. His speed was the only thing he had going for him. That's also why my father decided to take him into our pack from being a lone rogue. Normally, rogues stick in small groups versus true packs however he stayed by himself. I kept getting different vibes from Jace as his past was unknown to me and more than likely my father as well. However, he had been extremely loyal to us in the years he has been in the pack.I always wondered where he came from and how he ended up all alone, but a part of me felt it wasn’t my place to ask just my place to trust my father’s judgment.

We walked to a room with black doors and gold designs. That was odd; it was different from the whole mansion. The floors were white marble-like everywhere else, but the walls were black. Black floating shelves were spaced out with gold abstract decor. The wall right across from the desk was lined with shelves and books upon books. His desk was black, and he had a white couch near the fireplace. The fireplace was outlined with a golden mantle and black bricks. Damian Knight sure knew how to make what was his standout, it was an office, his office. The alpha must love to read and research things based on the number of books filling his office. I wouldn't have picked him for the reading type by any means, but I suppose there are some things most people do not know about all of us. I didn’t realize that gold was a color for this pack, but it was a decent break from the black, crimson mix of everyone else. However, it was odd that he wanted his office to stand out because if anyone attacked, they would know where to target.

"Let's discuss the matter of the merge and what your new roles will be." The alpha spoke to us. I still can't get over how devilish he sounds, maybe he did sell his soul. Jace was visibly shaking at the sound of his voice, what a fucking pussy I shook my head at him embarrassed. Though Jace’s reaction did seem as if he hadn’t been in this alpha's presence before. Unusual. I thought he had accompanied father on meetings here before. That’s when I saw him. That man still hadn’t taken his eyes off Katie, who the hell is he to her? Enough is enough I growl low enough that almost no one notices, the only one who did was that man and he responded with a smirk. I'm going to kill him the first chance I get, I cannot stand him near Katie and it's clear he knows that. So, we will do this the messy way and that’s fine by me.

"I was thinking I would take over the role as beta?” My father spoke calmly as if to not sound pushy towards Damian.

Finally, the awkward silence was broken. I feel like my father should be able to get that rank seeing as he did come from being the alpha of our pack regardless of size, though I am concerned due to this pack's size that the alpha may question his abilities. Still, it's unheard of for an alpha to be reduced to a low rank if a pack merges with another. The only logical move would be Damian demoting his current beta, whoever that is, and giving my father the rank. But I wouldn’t be shocked if Damian refused, my father didn’t exactly secure anyone’s ranks during this merger.

"No." Damian said. "I have a beta; Alexander, introduce yourself." He said looking at that man.

That's why they were dressed practically identical, I must choke down the growl that threatened to escape. Damnit, the beta is that close to Katie, it's clear they were something before I showed up. There is no way they have no romantic or even sexual connection. My blood had started to boil at this point. I couldn’t take it anymore.

"Hello, I'm Alexander Croft. I'm the beta of the Dark Silence pack." His voice was deep and fierce like the alpha's.

His gaze was cold, and his face showed no emotion. How could Katie be with someone like this? I guess I’ll just have to fuck the thought of him out of her mind.

"Damian, this is-" Alexander growled as my father tried speaking up to argue against the beta decision.

Jace stood in front of my father in an attempt to protect him while Katie just stood there watching, her worried teal eyes shifted between the men. I clenched my fist and prepared for a fight to break out. My father and Jace can hold their own, but Katie is in the path, and I don't want her hurt. My heart was racing, a feeling that was new to me as I'm normally a calm person even in battle, this must be because Katie is here. She’s doing this to me and I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not. The urge to keep her safe so that no harm fell to her was increasingly strong. She belonged to me and only me.

"This is my pack, merged or not you will not make demands. I don't care how long we have known each other. You didn’t put ranks into the contract!" Damian snapped at my father.

Those final words pierced through my father. Something was wrong, my father was so confident he would get that rank, and yet here we are. It was as if he wasn’t as close to Damian as he thought.

"You will work beside Maxwell, Bradley. He is my top warrior aside from Alexander. You and Maxwell will oversee the pack warriors. Now, for you Jace you will be led on patrols. Do you both understand?" His question seemed as if it answered itself, he wasn't going to take no for an answer. The fear his voice had instilled in my father and Jace was clear, they were in fear for their life. I could feel it.

I was in complete shock seeing my father being so submissive, but I have no doubt in my mind that if my father tried to continue to argue this matter, he would be killed for challenging the alpha.Damnit, father, you were so eager to get this over with that you forgot to negotiate anything in our favor. Sure, I’ll always be an heir due to the alpha mark but now I’m a pack-less heir. The lowest of the low in terms of being an heir.

"Father." She stole his gaze and it lightened, it wasn't cold and dark like it normally was, the look of a serial killer. His golden eyes seemed to shine looking at her as if she was the only thing keeping him at bay from killing everyone in sight, he truly is a demon. She was his weakness. Her soft southern accented voice still took me in awe, she sounded so sweet and caring it drove me crazy every time I heard her speak.

I was lost staring at her when I looked and noticed the beta, Alexander, had caught me and he looked furious. Jealousy did not look good on him, yet I wanted to make him so jealous. Maybe I’ll kiss her right now or fuck her in front of him. I glanced over at him and smirked just as he had done to me previously, this only made him madder as he started growling fiercely.

"If I might offer a suggestion." She smiled at him and the alpha relaxed, smiling back at her as if she was the only one in the room.

So, he does have a soft side and it's with her how interesting. My father could care less when it comes to me and speaking up, he would simply ignore me or yell. So, it was interesting seeing this demon cave to his daughter. The real question here was did she have that demonic streak in her? Maybe a bratty side of her I could tame?

Katie's POV

I can see things aren't going well and a blood bath is bound to follow, my father is getting to upset to fast. I see Dylan staring me down, weird but I'll just try and ignore it the best I can as I'm more worried my father may kill someone. However, Alexander must have noticed that Dylan was staring at me because he is furious and ready to attack, men I sigh to myself.

"Father." He looks at me and sees that I'm worried someone is going to die. He smiles at me suddenly and starts to calm down, good my plan to de-escalate this is working. My father may treat me like trash, but he tries to hide the bloodshed aspect of things in front of me.

"If I might offer a suggestion." I smile back at him, and he starts to completely relax, good that's what I want in this situation. My father is such a hard ass at times, and I'm still not ok with the fact he hit me yesterday however, we don't need a fight on our hands so I must do what I can.

"Let Bradley lead the warriors as you suggested but send Jace to work alongside Derrick. I think it would be better to have him around and helping Derrick than always out on patrols." I stand my ground against my father, throwing him a rather stubborn look as if I won't take no for an answer.
