“They were slaughtered,” he said as he shook his head. “Screamed in pain. We couldna get to all of them. That was when we all knew. The war would continue. We would either turn into the verra killers Con had brought us back from, or we could let the humans win. There would be no middle ground. The smaller dragons would continue to be hunted, and the larger ones would retaliate every time. Whatever peace we’d had was gone forever.”

She closed her eyes as the tears fell down her cheeks. The words Shaw said painted a vivid picture that she would never forget.

“We had to stop Ulrik,” Shaw said. “His Silvers were some of the largest of the dragons, and they were doing a lot of damage. Con, with the aid of our magic, stripped Ulrik of his powers, bound him in human form, and banished him from our home: Dreagan.”

Nia frowned.

“You think that was extreme?”

She nodded.

He shrugged. “Perhaps it was, but Con was our King. And Ulrik refused to listen. Con begged him to stop before he took action. Ulrik never did. Once Ulrik was no longer King of Silvers, Con bade them to return to him. All but four of the Silvers heeded him. We had to trap those four on Dreagan, deep in a mountain. Then, we combined our magic to open a dragon bridge from our world to another. We sent our dragons away, hoping they would be able to return someday. Seeing my Sapphires leave the realm was devastating.”

“Did you fight the humans then?”

“We set up a barrier around Dreagan, much like the one around the dragon land here. We hid there for centuries, waiting until dragons became myth and legend. Only then did we begin to venture out. We saw that the humans had spread to every corner of the globe—and destroyed everything in the process. We live among them now, but we hide who we are. We only shift at night or during thunderstorms.”

Nia climbed to her feet. “How did you know where the dragons went?”

“We didna until recently.”
