CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO
Fuck. Shaw felt as if dragons had trampled him. Replaying his history had been challenging. Yet, somehow, he had gotten through it.
“You sent the dragons away without knowing where they were going?” Nia asked incredulously.
“If they had remained on Earth, their lives would’ve been constant war. At least we gave them a chance.”
She rolled her eyes. “That’s shite. Dragons have magic. They, at the very least, could’ve killed the humans and taken back their world.”
“Were we to allow them to become killers?”
“Every one of you had a right to make a stand for your home.”
He twisted his lips. “We told the mortals that Earth was also their home. Were we supposed to go back on our word? Trust me, I’ve looked at it every way there is, and it all comes back to the vow we made—and the dragons we are.”
“You lost your world. Your dragons. Your very way of life,” she said in a soft voice.
“Aye.”
She licked her lips, confusion marring her brow. “How do you walk among them? Us, I mean.”
“I did it to one day see the dragons again. We soon realized that there wasna a place for our kind on Earth. It is the humans’ now. But the Kings are still the realm’s protectors.”
Nia looked away, digesting his words. “That’s a tremendous story.” Her gaze slid back to him. “But you aren’t finished, are you?”
“For millions of years, we prayed the dragons had found a home. Unbeknownst to us, a goddess named Erith created Zora for the dragons. She had befriended Con, though he had no idea who she was. Erith’s part in the story doesna end there, however. Con fell in love with a Light Fae, Rhi.”
“A Fae?”
Shaw frowned at her puzzled look. “Do you no’ know of the Fae?”
“Of course, I’ve heard of them, but they’re a myth.”
He grinned, thinking of all the Fae he knew. “Och, lass, they’re verra real. Rhi is on Zora now. She looks just like any other mortal. She’s verra powerful.”
“I-I…”
Shaw let her adjust to that knowledge and continued. “Con and Rhi are mates, but they fell in love during a time when the rest of the Kings were still dealing with our new lives. Con made the decision to end his relationship with Rhi because of us.”
“I don’t think Con is as intelligent as you think he is. I hope he at least told Rhi what he was doing and why.”
“As a matter of fact, he didna.”
Nia rolled her eyes. “Men. I swear.”
Shaw fought not to laugh. Rhi would love Nia. “The breakup didna go well, as you can imagine.”
“Obviously.”
“Neither of them knew that Rhi was pregnant.”
“I thought you said humans and dragons can’t have children.”
“I did. But Fae are no’ exactly human.”
Nia nodded and motioned for him to continue.
