“You think?” I asked.

“Yep. If you’re looking to step out on your marriage, it’s already over.”

“What about you?” I asked him. “Do you think you and Norah will beat the statistics?”

“Hell, we’ve been together fifteen years,” he said. “What’s another fifty? I’m not going anywhere. She’s not going anywhere. We waited this long because we wanted to make sure it was real. We didn’t want to get married just to get divorced.”

“Why are you getting married?” I asked him. “You’ve been together this long without making it legal.”

“Because we want to have a family and just figure it would be cool if we could all share the same last name,” he replied.

I wasn’t sure that was a good enough reason, but it was clear he loved her. The way he said it without even a hint of doubt was impressive. I wanted that with Claire. I wondered what it would be like to have that ring on her finger actually mean something.
