“Where’s your fiancée?” she asked without pulling away.
“She’s out with her friends.”
Her face lit up. “But not here?”
“No.”
“Any woman that lets a man like you out on his own doesn’t deserve you,” she said. “You’re the kind of man that should be put on a very short leash. There are girls like me everywhere.”
“Girls like you, huh? Gross.”
She ignored my insult. “You know, girls like me can be fun.” She ran a hand down my chest and came dangerously close to touching something she had no business touching.
I grabbed her wrist and stopped the downward trajectory. “Stop.”
“I’m not looking for a boyfriend. Your lady never has to know.”
It wasn’t the first time I had been propositioned, but it was the first time I was actually repulsed. I told her I was engaged, and she didn’t give a shit. She was ready to take me to bed despite me being with another woman.
I dropped her wrist and pushed her away. “My lady trusts me, and I trust her,” I said. “And she knows I would never do anything.”
“I didn’t think you’d be a prude!”
I shook my head and walked off the dance floor, back to the roped-off area for the bachelor party. It was just Tony sitting at the table drinking. He grinned when I sat down. “You’re lucky,” he said.
I assumed he was suggesting I was lucky the hot blonde was interested in me. “Trust me, that’s not the kind of luck I want.”
“No, you’re lucky you didn’t let her pull you off that dance floor and into a dark corner,” he said nonchalantly.
“Why?”
“Because I would have kicked your ass for real,” he said with a smile.
“What?”
“Claire is basically my sister,” he said. “You don’t get to fuck around on her. I would absolutely kick your ass. Yes, you’re bigger, but I fight dirty.”
I threw my head back and laughed. I grabbed the drink I had left on the table and took a long swig. “Good to know, but you never have to worry. I’m not about to step out on Claire.”
“Good,” he said. “I’m a lot of things, but I can’t stomach cheating. I might be an asshole but I’m loyal.”
“Norah trusts you?” I asked.
“I’ve never given her a reason not to trust me,” he said. “I know we don’t really know each other that well, but I love Norah. That shit that happened in high school, it was real. And for the record, I never made a move on her until the two of you broke up.”
“Shit,” I said. “I don’t care. Truthfully, she and I were never right for each other. We were good friends in junior high and it just kind of developed into this friendship with some kissing involved.”
“I know,” he said. “She told me you guys never sealed the deal.”
“Not talking about this with you,” I told him, grinning.
He laughed and raised his hand to get the waitress’s attention. We ordered another round of drinks and settled in to watch the rest of the guys.
“You’re already acting like a married guy,” he said.
“So are you,” I replied.
“I guess because we both know what we’ve got and neither of us is dumb enough to risk that. These assholes think they can get away with shit because their women are back home. I bet you a hundred bucks at least half of them will be divorced within the year.”
