Summer was quite adorable when she slept. She was curled up next to me in the clean sheets while Milo dozed on my chest after being reluctantly dropped off by the mothers a little while ago. I probably should have put him back in his crib, but once he fell asleep on me, it felt wrong to move him. So I was using my phone to do some reading.
“What’s got you frowning so intently?” Summer asked in a sleepy voice, keeping it quiet so she wouldn't wake Milo.
“I’m sorry. Did I disturb you?” I asked, glancing down at her.
She stretched lazily. “It’s okay. I probably need to get up.”
“You need to rest; you’ve been through a lot in the last few days.”
“A lot of dick,” she muttered through a chuckle, a small smile playing on her lips as her face flushed pink.
I bit back a laugh. “I want to laugh so badly right now, but I don’t want to wake up the baby.”
Summer’s eyes softened as she took in the sight of me with her son asleep on my chest. “You can put him in the crib, you know?”
I shrugged, or at least attempted to. It was actually quite hard to do with a baby lying on top of you. “It just felt… wrong?”
“I know exactly what you mean. The first few days I had him, I simply watched him. It didn’t help that, as a newborn, he was kind of a potato and didn’t do much. At least now he interacts with the world.”
I grinned up at her. “A cute potato, though, right?”
She nodded seriously. “The cutest. Through it all.”
Glancing at him, I set my phone down and gently laid my hand on his back, careful not to wake him.
“I sort of wish I knew what that time was like. Was there for it, you know?”
Summer’s expression was wistful, eyes going glassy. “I do. It’s something to watch a human grow.”
All I could do was nod.
“Shouldn’t you be at work?” she asked, frowning. “You took a lot of time off for… you know.”
“You just said a few moments ago that you went through a lot of dick. Now you’re acting shy?” I couldn’t stop myself from laughing at her adorably offended face.
“I am a woman of many contradictions; you’re just going to have to get used to it,” she teased, sticking her tongue out.
Placing one hand on Milo’s head so he wouldn’t be jostled, I leaned forward and quickly pressed my lips to hers, unable to stop the smile.
“I look forward to every contradiction, mate. As for work, I got two weeks off. Turns out being a workaholic pays off eventually. As soon as I said I wanted a little leave, they practically shoved me out the door.”
Summer chuckled softly, but I could also see the tension relax in her shoulders. It felt nice to assure her that she didn’t have to worry about me rushing back to work. I wanted her to know that I wasn’t going to just up and leave as the heat backed off—or ever, for that matter.
Plus, I wanted to be sure that her getting back on suppressants went smoothly. If that’s what she wanted. In any case, we couldn’t have another mix-up in the prescription department. I knew it was common to use generics to keep costs down for people, but Alex should have known to consult Summer or a doctor about doing so with suppressants. They were unique.
“I am sorry…about the suppressants. That never should have happened. Alex will answer for it.”
Summer crinkled her forehead. “It was an honest mistake. The doctor said it was an easy one to make.”
I gently cupped her face. “Still, it was a mistake that hurt you. That’s not okay.”
She bit her lip. “I can’t say it hurt all that much. I don’t have any regrets. That was…”
“Fucking fantastic?” I laughed as she nodded.
“Though I’m pretty sure my poor vagina has given up and gone into hibernation.”
