I snorted, still desperately trying not to wake Milo. “I’m sure she’ll come back to life after a little break. A heat is a lot, even for the alphas. I can only imagine what you go through.”

“Worth it.” She grinned, sinking deeper into the blankets.

We stayed like that, simply enjoying each other’s presence and dozing off every now and again, Milo still snoozing away on my chest. Summer was exhausted, understandably so. She had been phenomenal throughout the entire heat, and I was in awe of her.

And not only because that was the best sex I’d had in my entire life, by far, but also because she made me laugh, had the best taste in junk food, and was an incredible mother.

It had been the first time I had experienced a heat with an omega, but by God, I wanted to do it again—with her, only her. There was no denying that I was utterly besotted with Summer. Before the heat, I’d already been fairly obsessed, but now I was well and truly gone. She had me wrapped around her finger and didn’t even know it.

“Apparently, the mothers are already asking when they can look after Milo again,” I told her.

She chuckled. “They are welcome to see him whenever they want.” She gazed lovingly at her son. “I like that he has so many family members who adore him. When he was first born, it was just me and his mother. Then it was just me.”

“How did you do it?” I asked. “What about if you got sick?”

She grimaced. “I did, actually. It was when he was about five months old. I was utterly exhausted, and it was one of the things that made me really consider looking at the matchmaking service. I had this raging fever, and I could barely see straight, let alone stand up and function. But I had no choice for days. I worked through some of the most debilitating sickness I’ve ever had because there was no other option. I couldn’t not feed my baby. Of course, he got it, too, and then I was up with him, making sure he was okay. Eventually I got to sleep again. You…get used to it.”

“Well, that will never happen again,” I assured her. The thought of her on her own, struggling, while I was right there to help made my stomach turn uncomfortably. Summer had really been in a bad position when she came to us, and we were going to ensure she had the best life possible. She deserved the world. She was a kind, sweet woman, and we were incredibly lucky to have her in our lives. Milo too.

“I think I’m beginning to understand that,” she admitted in a softer voice, resting her head on my chest next to where Milo was sleeping and nuzzling into me.

I pulled an arm around her and tugged her closer. “I hope so. We’ve all got your back, Summer. You’re not on your own anymore. You have four alphas and their mothers, and we all want to help you. This is how it should be.”

She grinned up at me. “I am not complaining.” She leaned up to kiss my nose. “Not one little bit.”

Chapter 35

Summer

Turned out, I liked heats.

I liked them a lot.

That may have had something to do with the amazing pack of alphas I had.

Deep down, I had always thought of heats as scary, dirty, and powerless. That was the furthest thing from my reality. I only wish I had known sooner what I knew now. I could have avoided years of thinking the worst.

The guys had all been attentive and caring—the few flashes of memory I had were of them ensuring I was well cared for. Making me eat or shower in between bouts of mind-blowing sex. And talk about going from zero to sixty on the sex front.

I was no stranger to orgasms, but going through a heat was a whole new level of sex and climaxes.

“Breakfast?” Emmett asked as I padded into the kitchen, stretching.

I grimaced. I wasn’t overly hungry, given I had just woken up. “Coffee?” I asked hopefully.

Emmett chuckled and handed a cut-up slice of toast to Milo, who was happily babbling in his high chair. “How about a bagel and coffee?”

“Deal.” I sighed, sliding onto one of the stools at the breakfast bar and beaming down at my son, who was already making a wonderful, mushy mess of his breakfast. “Good morning to you, my handsome boy. You being a menace with that toast?”

“His toast-destruction abilities are honestly impressive,” Emmett commented, slicing a bagel for me and putting it in the toaster while I wiped Milo’s face.

Milo happily munched on it, though, eating a fair amount and creating a mess with the rest. I just smiled. I had to admit that it had been nice to not have to look after him for a few days. I’d missed him terribly, don’t get me wrong, but the tiny break from Mom duties had been nice.

“Oh, Hattie has been calling nonstop. She wants to see you guys soon and suggested brunch at Edie’s. Now that they’ve had a taste of grandbabies, I don’t think they’re going to stop asking for it anytime soon.”

He smirked, knowing just how feral the mothers were for grandbabies.

“They have always been baby crazy, but Milo has made everything ramp up a notch.” Emmett shrugged. “Really, Summer, it’s your own fault for having such a cute son.”
