“Well, don’t.”

He laughed. “Damn, ma. You ain’t gotta get all hostile with me this morning.”

“I’m not being hostile. You just get on my damn nerves.”

“That’s crazy, because you wasn’t saying that last night.”

I shook my head. “Okay, Cassian.”

“Oh, now it’s okay, Cassian? Last night you was calling me something else.”

I frowned. “No, I wasn’t.”

“You sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

“Shit, I could’ve sworn you called me daddy.”

His ass was lying because I knew damn well I hadn’t said no shit like that.

“No, the fuck I didn’t!”

He busted out laughing. “Aight, baby mama. If you say so.”

“I know so. But anyway, what do you want?”

“Damn, I can’t call and check on you?”

“You can, but you ain’t gotta call me aggravating me this early.”

“I’m checking on you, ma. Making sure you good. You left before I woke up.”

I glanced out the window as Banks turned into the parking lot of the dental office.

“I’m good. I just got to work, and I was already running late.”

“You could’ve woke me up. I would’ve made sure you got something to eat before you left.”

“I’ll grab something later.”

“Aight, but make sure you eat. Don’t be going all day without putting something on your stomach.”

“Okay, Cassian.”

“And don’t be acting all funny with me when you get home.”

I frowned. “What you mean acting funny?”

“You know exactly what I mean, ma. Don’t start treating me like I got cooties and shit.”

I couldn’t help laughing. “Boy, ain’t nobody about to do all that.”

“Good. Because I ain’t about to chase yo’ ass around my own damn house.”

“Whatever. Anyway, I just got to work, so I gotta go.”

“Aight, baby mama. Have a good day.”
