“For real?”

“Yup. She wanted to go out to eat, but I told her I was cooking tonight.”

“You could’ve gone out with your sister, ma. All you had to do was let me know so Banks could take you.”

I looked over at him. “Cassian, I don’t want that big ass man following me everywhere I go.”

“I know you don’t, shorty, but you know why he’s there.”

“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes. “Besides, yo’ ass already called me at work asking what I was cooking.”

He laughed. “Damn, I can’t ask what’s for dinner?”

“You can, but don’t be acting like I’m supposed to cook for you every damn day.”

“Ain’t nobody say all that.” He glanced at the food on the stove. “But I ain’t complaining either.”

“Of course you ain’t. You the one getting fed.”

“And I’m appreciating every bit of it, ma.”

I shook my head, trying not to laugh. “Boy, get out my kitchen.”

“Your kitchen?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Did I stutter?”

Cassian chuckled and backed away from the stove. “Aight, shorty. I’m gone let you do your thing.”

Even though this was his crib, I still called the kitchen mine. Hell, I was stuck here with his ass, and I couldn’t go back home. I might as well make myself comfortable.

I was still cooking when I heard a knock at the front door. I wiped my hands on the towel sitting on the counter before heading over to see who it was. I wasn’t about to just open the door without looking first, especially with everything Cassian had been telling me about the man who was after me.

When I looked through the peephole, I saw my sister standing on the porch, looking around like she was checking her surroundings. I laughed to myself before opening the door.

“Hey, sissy!” I greeted her with a smile.

“Hey, sis. This where you staying?” she asked, looking past me into the house.

“Yeah.” I stepped aside so she could come in.

“Shit, I guess this what being in the cartel do for you.” She laughed as she walked inside.

“Nah, he’s not in the cartel,” I told her, closing the door.

“Oh.” She looked around some more.

“Yeah.” I headed back toward the kitchen, and of course, her nosy ass followed me.

“So, what he do to own something this fucking big?”

“He owns a security business,” I replied, checking on the food.

“Security?” She looked at me. “Being a security guard get you shit like this?”

“I guess.” I shrugged.

“Hmm.”
