I knew by the way she was looking at me that she didn’t believe a damn word I was saying, but it was the truth. Cassian owned his own security business and was doing pretty damn good.
Once everything finished cooking, I started fixing plates. I made my sister’s first since she was a guest, then fixed Kendric’s. While I was putting food on his plate, I noticed Cassian watching me from where he was sitting.
I kept putting food on the plate. If his ass wanted something, he could open his mouth.
A few seconds later, he cleared his throat. I glanced over at him before turning my attention back to the food.
When he did it again, I finally looked up.
“Nigga, you need some water or something?”
Kendric started laughing, but Cassian didn’t even look his way.
“Nah, I’m good. I’m just trying to figure out how everybody getting fed in my house before me.”
I rolled my eyes. “Cassian, you see me fixing plates.”
“I see you, ma. That’s the problem.” He leaned back in his chair. “You done made sure everybody else straight, and I’m sitting over here looking stupid.”
“Boy, you ain’t finna starve.”
“I know I ain’t. I’m just wondering when my turn coming.”
“Whenever I get to you.”
He chuckled, shaking his head. “Aight, shorty. I’ma remember that.”
“Remember what?”
“How you treating me in front of company.”
“Nigga, please.” I laughed and went back to fixing his plate.
This man was being so fucking dramatic for no damn reason. I shook my head, finished fixing his plate, and handed it to him. Then I fixed mine, sat down at the table with everyone else, and said my grace.
“So, lil sis, what you do for a living?” Cassian asked, looking over at my sister.
“I’m in college,” she replied.
“Oh, yeah? What you going to school for, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Women’s Studies.”
He nodded and took another bite of his food. After that, the conversation died down, and everybody went back to eating. I glanced around the table, noticing how quiet it had gotten.
“So, what do you plan on doing with that degree once you graduate?” Kendric asked, looking over at my sister.
“I’m thinking about becoming a case manager or a social services assistant.”
“Oh, okay. That’s what’s up. What made you wanna get into that?”
“I like helping people, especially women who be going through shit and don’t have nobody to turn to. I figured if I’m gonna spend all this money going to school, I might as well do something I actually care about.”
“I can respect that.” Kendric nodded. “How much longer you got?”
“About another year, if everything goes how it’s supposed to.”
“That’s not bad.”
