“So did I.”
Her eyes came back to mine.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“You don’t have to say that.”
“I know.”
Her expression softened, barely enough to notice.
A few weeks ago, I might’ve missed it.
I didn’t now.
I stepped closer.
“Why do you keep doing that?”
Her eyebrows pulled together. “Doing what?”
“Giving me an out after I’ve already told you what I mean.”
She went still.
I didn’t say anything else.
For a moment, neither did she.
Then her eyes dropped.
“I don’t know.”
I could push.
The question was sitting right there between us, and part of me wanted to know the answer.
But I also knew Luna well enough now to recognize when she was trying to find one herself.
So I reached for her hand instead.
Her fingers slid between mine.
“I had a good time,” I said again.
She looked up.
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
A smile started at the corner of her mouth. “I’m trying.”
I laughed softly. “I’ll take it.”
Her thumb moved across the side of my hand.
