“I really wanted you here.”
The words were quiet.
I didn’t think she meant for them to hit me the way they did.
“Me or Mila?”
“Both.”
“Good answer.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
She shook her head, but she was smiling.
“I almost didn’t ask you.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I kept thinking maybe it was too soon.”
“And?”
“And then I realized I wanted you here more than I cared about whether it was too soon.”
I looked at her for a second.
There were probably a dozen things I could say.
Instead, I squeezed her hand.
“I’m glad you asked.”
“Me too.”
The front door opened behind her.
Renee stuck her head out.
“Luna, you want to take some of this chicken home?”
Luna closed her eyes.
“Mama.”
“What? I’m putting it up.”
“I have food at home.”
“You always say that.”
“Because I do.”
Renee looked at me. “Ellis, you want some?”
“I’ll take some.”
