Renee bent down to hug her.
“You come back and see me, okay?”
“Okay.”
“And next time I’ll make you some more macaroni.”
Mila’s face lit up. “Okay.”
I pointed toward the door before she could start negotiating the entire menu.
“Come on.”
She hugged Marcus too before heading outside.
I followed her onto the porch, but when I realized Luna was behind me, I stopped.
“You coming out?”
“Yeah.”
She pulled the door closed behind her.
Mila was already halfway to the truck, so I called after her to stay where I could see her before turning back to Luna.
For a second, we just stood there.
The noise from inside was muffled through the door now, and the porch light cast a soft glow across Luna’s face.
“Your parents are cool.”
She smiled. “You can say that because you don’t belong to them.”
“I like your dad.”
“I knew you would.”
“Why?”
“The grill.”
I laughed. “That’s all it takes?”
“For him? Pretty much.”
“And your mama likes Mila.”
“My mama loves Mila.”
The correction made me smile.
“Yeah. I noticed.”
Luna glanced toward the truck.
“She had a good time.”
“She did.”
