Nearby, Warden, Jax, and Tank arranged weapons and reviewed maps spread across the folding table. Link’s eyes drifted toward Noor, seated quietly in her wheelchair. Her face was pale, edged with fatigue and pain, yet she refused the painkillers offered earlier, determined not to dull her mind or miss a single moment.
Noor’s gaze was fixed wide and unblinking on the cascade of monitors that flickered to life across the hangar. Rows of laptops streamed live drone feeds and satellite imagery. She leaned forward slightly in her chair, her fingers twitching nervously against the armrests as if trying to grasp the invisible threads of data flowing before her.
Despite the exhaustion pulling at her, the awe in her eyes was unmistakable, fragile hope flickering beneath the weight of everything she had endured. To Noor, this technological web was more than equipment; it was their lifeline, their eyes in the sky, and the slender thread that could lead them back to her daughters.
That quiet, almost reverent look anchored itself in Link’s mind. It was a stark reminder of what was truly at stake, not just the mission, but the chance to bring Noor’s fractured family back together.
From his vantage point just inside the hangar door, Link glanced toward the ridge where Nova crouched in a concealed overwatch position. He pictured her watching silently over the hanger while the team worked below to establish their command post.
Link tapped into the secure Montana link. Swede’s voice, caught up in a yawn, filled the comms with vital updates from the distant command center.
“Hey everyone, let’s review the plan one more time,” Warden called over to Jake, Thorn, and Enzo, who had just finished packing their gear and checking their weapons. The Brotherhood Protectors team joined Link and his comrades from the Blue Ridge Protectors, Sammy, Jax, and Shadow, gathered around the map, their faces showing the exhaustion, yet still determined to get the job done.
Warden pointed firmly at the compound’s front gate. “Our job is to create the distraction. Jake, Thorn, Enzo, Spider and I will breach hard up front to draw every guard’s attention and keep them focused topside.”
Jake nodded, the thrill of the challenge evident in his eyes. “We will be the bait, just like old times,” he said smiling, recalling past missions with a mix of nostalgia and adrenaline.
Thorn added, his expression serious, “Just remember to make a ruckus and keep them moving away from the back entrances. We need them topside and distracted.”
Enzo glanced at the Blue Ridge Protectors. “ That gives Link and his team the window to move in without getting spotted.”
Link confirmed, his voice steady. “Exactly. My team, consisting of Jax, Tank, Blast and I, will move underground through the tunnels, guided by Noor’s intel. Our mission is to hit the holding cells fast, find the girls, and extract them before Faisal can react.”
Jax traced the maze-like tunnel layouts with his finger. “No gaps, no surprises. Noor and Sammy did a great job mapping every passage. I will take the lead through the east door. Tank, you watch my back.”
Tank nodded, tapping his chest protector, “I will be right behind you.”
Jake leaned forward, serious. “What about comms? Any intel on the guards’ rotation or reaction times?”
Link replied firmly, “They are jumpy but predictable. If Warden’s team holds their focus, we will have the window we need.”
Warden locked eyes with Link, determination evident in their exchange. “Timing and discipline are paramount. The moment we breach, your team moves in. Nova and Dog will provide overwatch to ensure you have cover. And remember, Shadow, Noor and Sammy will have a small command center set up at the airstrip, monitoring everything from the hangar. They will have comms and surveillance to support us while we are in the field.”
Enzo studied the map again. “It is a dangerous mix of hostiles outside and unknowns below. Everyone needs to stay sharp, especially when we split up.
“Agreed,” Thorn replied with resolve. “No one gets left behind. We have two little girls to bring home to their Mama and their new brother,” he smiled towards Sammy and Noor.
Once the briefing concluded, Nova’s voice crackled over the radio. “Still clear from my position. Dog and I are ready to move closer to the cisterns and set up for overwatch.”
“Copy that Nova, move on,” Link replied.
Warden looked around at the diverse group, “Let’s execute this cleanly and efficiently.”
The team continued final gear checks, tension ebbing slightly now that everything was in motion.
Link looked again at Noor. Despite the fatigue, a fragile hope lit her eyes. For Link, that was more than enough reason to push forward.
Back in the command corner, Sammy adjusted the strap of the compact rifle Tank handed him. Shadow, sling still binding his arm, shouldered a lightweight carbine, eyes steady beneath the weight of the mission.
His voice softened as he turned to Sammy, placing a firm hand on his son’s shoulder. “I love you, Sam. Stay sharp. I promise, I’ll come back with Yasmin and Amina.”
Noor met Link’s eyes with fierce hope shining through exhaustion.
Link’s tone was steady, filled with quiet resolve. “Noor, I’m coming back with your daughters. Just hold on.”
22 - LINK
The Syrian desert night was a velvet cloak, moonless and profound. It swallowed the distant hum of the Black Hawks, which had dropped them hours earlier at the makeshift airfield, but amplified the crunch of desert grit beneath Link’s boots. Two miles. Two miles of undulating sand and scattered rock lay between the hangar and Faisal’s fortified compound. Every shadow seemed to stretch, breathing with phantom life, under the watchful, invisible gaze of a hundred thousand stars.
