Just as she was about to speak, the door, which had been slightly ajar, swung open. Link stood there, his presence filling the doorway. He hadn’t just appeared; Noor could feel that he had been hovering close by, listening intently in case he needed to step in, a silent witness to Samir’s vulnerable confession. His eyes, usually so guarded, held a raw, exposed tenderness as he looked at Samir, then at Noor.

He walked into the room, moving with purpose, and sat on the other side of the bed, creating a small, silent circle. He took Noor’s uninjured fingers, his touch firm and reassuring.

“Noor,” he said, his voice low and steady, his gaze direct and unwavering. “Sammy is right. He’s my son. And my home in Virginia… when he and I built that house on Mountain View Farms, we built it as a home for you as well. We always planned for you to come once we freed you from Faisal. It’s for you. It’s for you and the girls.”

Noor’s breath hitched again, softer this time, a quick catch before she forced it steady. Tears slipped down her cheeks, tracing silent paths over bruised skin. The words were a lifeline, cutting through the anxiety that had just threatened to consume her. He had seen her fear, recognized her unspoken question, and answered it without hesitation. Without a word, Link reached for a tissue and gently wiped her face, careful and tender where she could not reach herself. Her new, profound relief felt almost dizzying. A home. A real one. For all of them.

Noor barely moved, but Sammy stretched cautiously toward her, careful to keep his touch light. He leaned in, wrapping his arms slowly around her in a gentle hug, making sure not to jostle her injured ribs or casted arms. Noor’s breath caught at the warmth of the embrace after so long. She let herself hold on, savoring the moment despite the dull ache it stirred.

Her eyes then fell upon the tablet still clutched in Link’s hand. The hastily sketched map of Faisal’s compound, with its ominous tunnels and hidden cisterns, glowed faintly in the dim light. Thirty-six hours. The words echoed in her mind. Her son was here, safe, loving her. But Yasmin and Amina were not.

Just then, the door opened softly and the nurse stepped back into the room. “Noor, it’s been an hour,” she said gently. “You need your pain medication now, and some rest.”

21 - LINK

The desert night was quiet and electric, the air humming with anticipation. Link sat in the back of a black SUV as it rumbled away from the Jordanian safe house, headlights piercing the gathering darkness. The convoy rolled steadily over rough terrain, each vehicle loaded with men and gear.

After a tense drive, the convoy arrived at a small, makeshift landing zone. The rugged clearing was little more than a dusty field framed by faded tire tracks and crumbling concrete slabs, just enough space for the waiting Black Hawks.

The team climbed out, moving with ease despite the weight of their packs and weapons. Warden’s SEALs—Dog, Nova, Spider, Blast, and Tank—sprang into action, running quick gear checks with smooth efficiency. The atmosphere was tense but professional.

Link called out, “Ammo, comms, and med kits from the first SUV go on Hawk One. Jake, Enzo, Thorn, you’re with me on Hawk Two. Help get the packs stowed.”

Jake shot Thorn a grin. “From VIP protection in Amman to a no-kidding raid in Syria. Not exactly a step down.”

Thorn chuckled, hefting a heavy case. “Definitely not our usual hotel lobby watch.”

Enzo laughed softly as he slung a pack over his shoulder. “At least this mission’s got some teeth. Makes the bulletproof glass dull in comparison.”

Nova caught their banter but kept focused. “Know your gear and where it’s stowed. This isn’t a walk in the park.”

Spider added, “No fumbling when we hit the ground. Keep it tight.”

Blast stacked medical cases near the helicopter ramp. “Keep med gear by the door. And Dog, if you packed another one of those thousand-page biochemistry textbooks in here, I’m throwing it out mid-flight. We need the weight for ammo.” Dog just smirked, patting a suspiciously heavy side pouch on his medic bag.

The light banter was a welcome distraction, but Link’s mind was already moving ahead to the mission.

Sammy carefully pushed Noor’s wheelchair while Shadow stayed close, his right arm securely in a sling. The group moved as one, bound by instinct and training.

“Boarding in two,” Warden said quietly, scanning the perimeter. “Comms discipline. Follow protocol. No deviations.”

Link stepped forward. “Everyone knows the plan. Warden’s SEALs hit the front gate hard, push the guards out. Our team goes through the tunnels to get the kids. Noor, Sammy, and Shadow will stay safe at the command post.”

Without hesitation, Warden’s SEALs formed up and headed for the first Black Hawk, their steps crisp and controlled.

Link followed Sammy and Noor toward the second helicopter. Crew members were already fitting two child-sized booster seats near the rear cabin, designed for fast deployment and secure harnessing.

Sammy guided Noor up the ramp while Shadow stayed close despite his injury. Inside, Link watched as the crew transferred Noor to a reinforced medical seat, taking care to pad and secure her with multi-point harnesses. He tightened her straps, trying to make her as comfortable as the situation allowed.

Sammy settled beside her, eyes alert despite the heaviness in his chest. Link saw the conflict in the boy’s expression—caught between the innocence of youth and the hardening necessity of a soldier in the making.

The Black Hawks lifted off, cutting through the night toward the isolated landing strip inside Syria. After a short, tense flight of about thirty minutes, they touched down on cracked concrete, kicking up a haze of dust.

The team disembarked quickly, moving into a weathered hangar nearby. The air was stale, tinged with oil and dust, the cavernous space empty except for scattered gear cases.

Link’s focus shifted immediately to setting up the command post. Rugged laptops, portable satellite units, encrypted radios, and drone controllers were unpacked and brought to life.

Spider assembled antennas while Link powered up laptops, routing secure data lines. Sammy, sharp-eyed despite the mission’s weight, assisted with system checks and encryption.
