He weighed just over six hundred pounds at the time of his yearly physical, and no one knew how he’d gotten by with it for so long.He didn’t just blow up to that weight overnight, and he would not lose the weight in a year that they gave him to lose it.Aaron was doing a good job running the stationhouse, and he couldn’t have been prouder of him.
Reagan had plenty of things to do to keep him busy at work.Dad had fully retired and was planning a trip with Mom soon. All his patients were now his, and he was enjoying working with them. He’d had no trouble getting them in his schedule and was happy that most of them seemed to be just as happy with him as they had been with his dad.
His parents were going to see Europe like they had on their honeymoon, and he was excited for them.Reagan wasn’t excited about them being gone for a month, but with cell phones and technology nowadays, they could speak to each other every day and not miss a thing.Plus, they were going to send pictures everywhere they went, and that would be just like being with them.He was going to miss them both very much.
“I’ve never been on a cruise before.”He asked Blake if that was something that she’d want to do.“I would, I think.I don’t know if I’d get seasick or not, but I’m willing to try it.Besides, having a doctor as a husband should make it so I can get the best drugs when I’m aboard ship.”
“I’ll take very good care of you.”Blake had stopped by his clinic to bring him lunch, and they ate it in his office. He’d hired two more nurses to help with the extra work and was pleased that things with them were working out, too.Even his home was becoming more controlled now that he had a staff to help out around the house.
The cook was working out the best. She would have meals for them ready when they got home from work daily, and he loved that if he made a little mess anywhere, it was cleaned up before he came back home.Even having someone make their beds was better than he’d thought.Having a nice, neat bed to get into was the best thing ever, he thought. Now if he could just get Blake in his bed, he’d feel much better than he had in days.
He was jerking off in the shower most every morning, and sometimes he’d take a shower so that he could be relaxed enough to go to sleep at night. It was hard waiting for her to tell him when she was ready, but he’d wait a lifetime if that was what it took for her to come to him.He would never force her to do anything that she didn’t want to do, and if that meant that he had to continue to pleasure himself, that’s what he’d do.
“Doctor Dredsen, you have a phone call on line three. It’s the hospital about one of your patients.”He said he’d take it in his office, and he picked up the line while sitting at his desk. Before he pushed the button for line three, he asked if he knew who it was.“They said it was Mrs.Winters, but I can’t find anything on a file by that name.”
“She’s not a patient of mine.I’ll take care of this, but in the future, tell them that she’s not mine and that I don’t know why she keeps calling here at the office. This is the fourth time that she’s tried telling people that I’m her doctor.”
“I’ll take care of it when they call again.”He knew that she would, too.His secretary for the office was a hard-nosed woman who ran a good office. She kept him in line as well.“I can take care of this call if you’d like for me to.I don’t like it when people play games with my office.”
“I’ll do it this time.”He pressed the button for line three and was asked if he could hold a moment. He knew that nurses were busy all the time and didn’t mind waiting for her to get back to him.But he would hold on for only so long, however, because he was busy too.
“Doctor R.Dresden?”He said that was him.“I’m sorry to bother you at your office.I just found out that she wants to talk to you, and that’s not going to happen.I didn’t check first to see if she really was a patient of yours, so I’ll nip that in the bud right now.She doesn’t have a phone in her room because she was making calls on her own that were not helping us with her care.”
“I understand that.I’ve had dealings with the woman before.”He could hear her tsking and had to hold back a laugh.“I know that you guys are busy, but if you could, would you have her stop calling my office? She was calling my home for a while, and now that I’ve had my number changed there, shecan’t reach me.I’m not her doctor.I’m married to her sister, and I don’t think that would work out between us.”
“She can be pretty insistent when she wants something, but I’ll see what I can do.There are a number of nurses on this floor, so I can’t help if she gets to one who doesn’t know the rule.I’ll spread it around as much as I can and also have a talk with Ms.Winters.”He told her that he appreciated that.“Thank you for being so patient with us.We’ll get through this.”
“Have you gotten her meds straightened out?”She said her previous doctor is managing her through the hospital, but he won’t take her on as a client in his office.“I’m glad to hear that.I hope that he can make her understand that this is only temporary for her and that she’ll eventually have to find herself someone else.Just not me.”
For the rest of the day, he thought of nothing but Robin. How she’d made Blake so miserable that he’d had to have their phone number changed on their cell phones because of her.He just wanted her out of their lives so that they could get on with their own, but she was making it difficult. Her depression was making Blake upset, and he didn’t like the way things were going.
After work, he was on his way home when he heard from Blake. She was getting off then, and she wanted to know if he wanted to meet her in town for dinner. It was the cook’s night off; he’d forgotten about that, and she didn’t want to have to cook and clean up.He thought that was a wonderful idea and told her so.She said they could just get sammiches if he wanted, and that would be fine with her. They were going to go to the Scotties Den for dinner, and they’d enjoy their meals. He loved eating there, too.
Scotties, the local team’s mascot, was a little dog; it was a place to go after all sporting events. They had all kinds of dogs in different media, all around the place, and articles about their little town, too. He’d read every one of them over the years, and he was happy that the place was still standing after all these years. They also served a great burger and fries, and he thought that their house salad was something that should be in every restaurant in the state. It was that simple, too.
They enjoyed their meal of burgers and fries and walked to the local ice cream shop for a cold treat afterwards. As they had walked to the Dari bar, they both held hands as they walked back to their cars. He’d gotten a malt made with chocolate ice cream, and she’d gotten a twisty cone with sprinkles. He thought it was funny that she’d ordered something so childish, but he loved her for it.He was finished with his by the time they were getting into their car.
Driving home, he thought of all the things that he wanted to do when he got there.Mostly, he just wanted to lie down on the couch and take a nap, but he knew that he had things to do.All of it was paperwork that he’d brought home yesterday to fill out.Going to his office, he’d been there about half an hour when Blake came into his office with a phone to her ear.She had been crying too, he noticed, and got up to go to her.
“I understand, Robin, but I want to know how you got my phone number.”He was wondering the same thing when he realized that it was Robin on the phone and not someone else.“You’re not supposed to be making calls either.I want you to hang up right now and not call me again.”She tilted the phone so that he could hear as well.
“I just want you to come here and visit me.I’m depressed very badly and could use you to be here for my sounding board. You know that you’re the only one who makes it so I’m not in a black hole. This place is hitting all my triggers at one time, and I’m not doing well.I’ve been here for five days, and I’ve not seen you once.I don’t like that, Blake, and you know it.Come to see me, or else I’ll have to do something drastic.”
“Drastic how? You’re forever doing something that upsets me.It’s time I take some time for myself and not just you.”She said that they were still going to live together.“No, we’re not.I have a life now, and it doesn’t involve you and your depression.I need to keep away from you because you trigger my depression.”
“You’ll never be as depressed as I am.Did I tell you that I’m taking the strongest dose there is for an anti-depression?It’s because I have depression worse than anyone has ever had it.I’m not well, and you’re not helping me be better because of the way that you’re acting.”She said that she’d done nothing to her.“No, that’s where you’re wrong. You’ve always been my trigger, and when you think to ignore me like this, things go badly. You know that I’m sick, Blake, yet you continue to ignore my symptoms and ignore me as well.Well, it’s not going to continue.I need you to come down here so that I can have a talk with you about the things that have been going on.”
“I’m not doing anything until you tell me how you got my phone number.”She said that she had money and that money could get her anything that she wanted, including things that weren’t supposed to be out there.“You mean you paid someone a great deal of money to get my number so that you could call and harass me?That sounds like something you’d do.I’m not going down there, Robin.I’m dealing with my own things right now, and I’m happy. As happy as I’ve ever been in my life.”
“You have no idea how it is that I suffer.”Reagan was glad when Blake didn’t say anything. There was nothing to say to someone like her sister, and he knew that for a fact.“I’m the worst case of depression ever heard of.And I take the best kind of drugs from my doctor.Did I tell you that he’s taken me back?I’ll be seeing him five times a week now, too.See that I don’t.”
“He said that it was only temporary and that he wasn’t going to be seeing you outside the hospital again.”Robin said that she’d see about that.“He also told you that you’d need to get yourself another doctor. It sounds to me like he wants nothing to do with you either. You know as well as I do that he never agreed to see you every day of the work week.”
“I’m going to make him famous because I’m depressed all the time. He’ll be the only doctor who treats someone who is as depressed as I am all the time.”Blake rolled her eyes, and that had him laughing.“Is that him? That monster? You tell him that he’s on my list as well. He’s become my worst nightmare about my depression.I can’t sleep at night because of him, and I don’t like him.”
“I don’t think that he likes you all that much either.”She asked her why.“What difference does it make why he doesn’t like you.I don’t much care for you either right now.”
“You’re my own sister, and you treat me like this? How could you when I’m so ill?You should be grateful that I even give you the time of day, the way that you’ve treated me.”She asked her what she’d done.“You’ve triggered me into a deep depression so badly that I’m unable to function.”
