He rubs his thumb over my cheek. “She’s improvising. It’s fine.” Then he sighs. “And my dad was in here earlier, and he was kind of an ass.”

I let out a little growl. “I told you that you should let me punch him out when he was such a jerk at our engagement party.”

He smiles. “My fierce little Lele, always looking out for me.”

“You should have let me look out for you,” I say. “Not keep all this stuff to yourself.”

“I know.” He shrugs. “I just really love you. And I wanted you to have the best day.”

I blink rapidly, trying to keep the sudden tears at bay. “Bodhi.” I mirror his pose, bringing my hands up to hold his cheeks. “Have you seen my sisters today?”

“Not since they got dressed.”

I shake my head, a tightness in my throat making it difficult to talk. “They look so beautiful. When they changed into their dresses, it literally took my breath away. And my mom got to help me put on my dress. And Karen and Alex and Nisha and your mom were there. We did our makeup and drank champagne and talked.”

He grins. “All your favorite things.”

“You’remy favorite thing. And I get to marry you. Of course it’s going to be the best day.”

It’s his turn to blink rapidly. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was going on. I won’t do that again.”

“Good. Because we’re supposed to deal with this stuff together.”

There’s a knock at the door and Leo peeks his head around. “I have the needle and thread.”

I step away from my fiancé. “You heard the man, Lakra. Get those pants off.”

“You guys want privacy?” Leo asks, grinning.

“Go down and tell Liz she can start the procession in five minutes. I want to get this show on the road.”

“A little impatient, are we?” he asks.

“No, I just want to sign the marriage license before there’s a freak tornado or something.”

Leo chuckles as he pops back out of the room. Bodhi is already stepping out of his pants and handing them over. I peer at the ripped seam. “This isn’t even that bad. Remind me to teach you how to fix a seam. You could have done this in no time.”

“I’d rather you do it. I love watching you sew.” He runs his thumb between my eyebrows. “You get this little concentration line right here. Cutest thing ever.”

It only takes a minute to get the seam fixed up. “You want me to go ahead of you?” he asks as he pulls his pants back on. He doesn’t look so stressed anymore—in fact, he can’t seem to stop grinning. “Meet you down the aisle?”

“Nope. You can walk me down to my dad.”

“Awesome,” he says deadpan. “I totally want to give him one last chance to punch me out before I steal you away.”

I laugh, slipping my arm through his. “Come on, Lakra. Let’s get married.”

We’re almost down the stairs when I remember something. “What was that you said about my dress?”

Bodhi stumbles in surprise, which makes me stumble, too. I titter on my heel, grabbing his arm and the banister for support. “Shit,” he says, grabbing my waist. “You okay?”

“I’m fine.” But when I go to take a step, I realize that’s not exactly true. “Oh my god. I think I just broke my heel.”

“No you didn’t.” Bodhi bends over to peer under my dress.

“Hey!” my dad shouts from the bottom of the stairs, where he apparently came in search of me. “Get out of there!”

“Her shoes!” Bodhi shouts. “Was just looking at her shoes.” He stands. “And it’s definitely broken.”
