“Nothing to worry about,” she trills. “I’m just hoping to grab Alex—” she looks down at Alex’s boot and curses under her breath.

“Okay, what’s going on?” I ask, starting to get worried.

“The groom just needs a little help.”

Leo comes sliding into the tent, looking way stressed. I gape at him—the guys are supposed to be waiting at the end of the aisle by now. “Where’s Bodhi?” I ask, the worry growing.

“No biggie,” Leo says, trying to make his face look calm. “I was just wondering if you maybe had some thread and a needle? Or if Alex might be able to come with me?” He remembers her boot and curses. “Can you do stairs in that?”

“We could bring him down to her,” Liz says to him, pulling out her phone. “The bride can wait inside.”

“Bodhi’s still upstairs?” I ask. “He was supposed to bring his mom down the aisle already.”

“Just a little delay,” Liz chirps as Leo brings his phone to his ear. I can hear Bodhi’s voice through the phone all the way over here. He sounds panicked.

I turn to Alex and thrust my bouquet in her hand. “Hold this, please. I’m going to see what he needs.”

“Everly, you don’t need to do that,” Leo says. “We can handle this. It’s just a little—”

“If you say delay again, I’m going to start yelling,” I tell him.

“You’re not supposed to see him before the wedding,” Vega says, tugging my arm. “Let me go. Or mom!”

I gently pull my arm away. “I’ll stand in the hallway and talk to him through the door,” I say. I can’t explain why, exactly, but right now I know I need to hear his voice. And I think he might need to hear mine. “Which room is he in?”

Leo studies me for a moment before sighing. He can probably tell that I’m not going to be swayed on this. “I’ll bring you to him.”

“Make sure everyone out there has a blanket and the heaters are working,” I say. The last thing we need is for the guests to start getting cold while they wait for us to fix whatever is going on.

“He really is okay,” Leo says to me as he guides me into the lodge. “There’s a problem with his tux.”

“What kind of problem?”

He grimaces. “Seam on the pants split. Right down his ass.”

“Oh no.” I think through my options as we walk upstairs. “Okay. I can fix a seam, no problem. He can just hand over the pants and I’ll do it in the hallway.”

Leo clears his throat. “I should probably warn you that he’s a little…stressed right now.”

My stomach sinks. I’ve been having a chill, happy afternoon and Bodhi is over here freaking out? That doesn’t sound right.

“I have a sewing kit in the library,” I tell Leo. “Will you get it for me? Top drawer of the desk.”

“Sure, Lele.” He smiles down at me. “You look beautiful, by the way. He’s going to lose his mind.”

“Thanks, Leo.”

He leaves me outside the bedroom door at the top of the stairs. I can hear soft thuds from inside, followed by occasional curse words. I knock on the door. “Bodhi? Babe?”

Another curse, louder this time, then the door cracks open. “Everly? He wasn’t supposed to get you!”

Oh, he really sounds upset. My heart sinks. “Baby what’s wrong?”

“It’s just these fucking pants,” he snaps. “Like we really needed one more thing to go wrong.” There’s a thud, like he hit his palm into the wall.

I frown, thinking about his words. And what Presley said a few minutes ago, and that weird silence earlier when I was talking about how smooth it was all going. “What do you mean another thing?”

He’s quiet for a beat. “Nothing.”
