“Because I’m a fucking idiot,” I mutter.
“No argument here.”
She waits for me to elaborate and I let out a sigh. “I went to see her after I left Mom’s but I ran into her producer first. She told me they wanted to set up a love triangle plot for the new season.” I briefly explain about the Cain family and how the production company is trying to milk Fox’s involvement in their film into valuable cross-promotion. “So he wants her to pretend like she’s interested in this guy.”
“And she agreed to that?”
“She must have. Why else would the producer tell me about it like it was some done deal?”
She stops again, staring at me. “Bodhi, please tell me you at least had a conversation with her before you jumped to that conclusion.”
I picture that awful fight out on the sidewalk. The expression on her face when I told her it was done.
My sister groans, studying my face. “Good lord, you’re even more stupid than I thought.”
“You just spent fifteen minutes telling me how wonderful I am and how I never have to earn your love.
She rolls her eyes. “That was before I realized what a dumbass you are.”
“You are terrible at heartfelt conversations, Nish,” I grumble. “Aren’t big sisters supposed to give advice?”
“You want some advice? Fine. Go pack up your tent and drive straight home. If she’s not there, drive wherever she is. Then do whatever you have to do to get her to forgive you for being an idiot. Beg at her feet if you have to.”
“Nisha—”
“You know what, forget the tent,” she says, shaking her head. “You don’t have time. Just go find her.”
“What if she doesn’t want to talk to me?” I wouldn’t even blame her. I can’t believe I treated her the way I did.
“Then you keep trying until she does.” She gives me a fierce look. “Everly isperfectfor you. She’s the only person in the world who could put up with all your nonsense—”
“I’m really glad you came all the way out here to make me feel better.”
“You’ll feel better when you fix this,” she says, crossing her arms and giving me that no-nonsense-Mom look that she perfected over years of being my big sister. “There are a million things in this world you can’t fix, no matter how much you might want to. But this? This is something you can fix, Bodhi. And you’re going to regret it forever if you don’t try.”
