“You did?”
“Sure. I don’t want you uncomfortable every time you go in there.”
“Wow,” I murmur, then wonder if it’s only my hormones that has me feeling so touched. Because there’s something about River standing in between me and a too-cheerful nurse in baby bottle scrubs that has me wanting to cry. “Thank you.”
“I take my protective role as your baby daddy very seriously,” he says. “I promise to keep you safe from all the happy people who make you feel homicidal.”
I snort with laughter. “You already know me so well.”
His jaw clenches but he doesn’t respond. “You’re on board with food?” he asks instead.
Now that he’s mentioned food, it’s all I can think about. “Oh my God, yes please. I’m starving.”
He grins. “Same. What should we eat? I guess sushi and deli sandwiches are out.”
I scowl. “It’s really not fair that I have to give up foods I love and you don’t.”
“You’re right. How about I give up all the same stuff?”
I blink at him, surprised. “Don’t be silly. I was just teasing.”
“No way,” he says firmly. “We’re a team now, whether you like it or not, babe. You don’t eat sushi, I don’t eat sushi.”
I narrow my eyes, studying the side of his face as he drives. “I bet you don’t even like sushi.”
He laughs. “Not my favorite. But the other stuff too—beer and coffee. I’ll even give up lunch meat.” He takes his eyes off the road to give me a puppy dog look. “Which is huge, because sandwiches are one of my main food groups.”
I laugh. “You really don’t have to do that.”
“I really do.” He seems way more serious about this than I would expect. I’m about to argue some more when he changes the subject. “Now. What kind of food are you craving?”
“Hamburgers,” I say immediately. “Juicy, greasy hamburgers.”
“That’s my girl,” he says, grinning. “Any favorites? There’s an In-and-Out up ahead.”
I chew my bottom lip, not sure if I should be honest with him. “Would it be weird to go to Ruby’s?” I finally ask, my stomach winning out. “Because that was probably the best hamburger I’ve ever had.”
“Right?” he agrees happily, smacking his hands on the steering wheel. “It’s the onions, I think. They sauté them in bacon grease.”
I moan a little. “Whatever it is, I’ve literally had multiple dreams about them in the last few weeks. Ever since I found out I was pregnant, all I’ve been craving is meat.”
He grins. “I hope you appreciate how much effort I’m putting into not making a perverted joke right now.”
I laugh, feeling lighter than I have all day. “I’m grateful for your struggle. Now take me to your grandma’s bar and feed my pregnant ass.”
