CHAPTER 1
BERLIN “DRIX” KING
Itapped my wife’s contact and called her, one hand on the steering wheel.
“Hey! You home already?” she asked as soon as the call connected.
“Nah. I was just calling because I wanted to tell you that Monica was back on her bullshit and I didn’t want you to hear it from social media instead of me.”
“What do you mean back on her bullshit, Berlin?”
“I mean she’s had her baby and she’s saying it’s mine…” I braced for impact. “And uh, she allegedly has some kind of proof that the baby is mine.”
“How— She— It—” Myome stuttered, then went quiet. My heart jumped in my chest when I heard a crash then Charm’s ass yelling in the background.
“Myome? Myome?!” Charm yelled.
“Yo! Twin?” I took the phone from my ear and put it on speaker. “Myome?!” I barked.
There was more screaming on the other side of the phone but I didn't get to hear it for long before my hearing went out and my chest tightened. I pulled over and put a hand on my chest while trying to take deep breaths. My chest was taut and mylungs were struggling. My eyes watered as I hung up the call with Myome to press Chandler's contact while I struggled to breathe.
She answered on damn near the first ring and her eyes widened as she looked at me gasping.
“Berlin? Something’s wrong with Berlin!” she yelled.
Chaos took over the line and the phone slipped from my hand while I clutched my chest. I pushed my car door open and prayed that the fresh air would help me out.
I felt my vision blur from my lack of oxygen and I heard my family closing in on me before I saw any of them. Rome was the first person to me and he leaned into the car and quickly undid my seatbelt.
“Berlin?” He slapped my face softly. “I’m right here, Berlin.”
“Move.” Dashawn roughly nudged him out of the way and grabbed my hands.
He yanked me out of the car and forced me onto my feet. The cold night air hit me and I did my best to stay on my feet. Dashawn wrapped his arms around me, interlocked his hands at my back, and hugged me. Tightly. I blinked some tears free and gasped again, then my head fell forward when I actually felt air fill my lungs. Dashawn squeezed and I hiccupped as air finally traveled through my body. I closed my eyes and focused on breathing.
“You want to count?” Dashawn asked. My eyebrows knitted together and he didn’t give me a chance to respond. “Ten. Nine. Eight…” He started a countdown and I sniffled and nodded before I joined in.
“Five. Four. Three.”
He hit me on the back and let me go.
I sniffled and my hand automatically flew to my chest. I blinked my watering eyes and grunted when Chandler collided into me, her arms thrown around my neck immediately while she sobbed like I was on my damn deathbed.
“Come on now, Chan. Stop crying. I’m alright.” I wrapped my arms around her. “I’m alright.”
“You sure?” Rome asked. “You didn’t look alright.”
“I’m good. I promise.” I made a move to grab my cell phone from my car and immediately called Myome back.
She didn’t answer and I looked for Charm’s number to call her instead.
“Berlin!” my pops yelled and I looked down the street where he was quickly rolling toward me in his wheelchair, my mom right behind him.
“I’m alright,” I said quickly. “I’m cool.”
“You’re not alright and you’re going to the hospital.” Chandler sniffled as she wiped her eyes.
“I don’t need to go to no damn hospital,” I said simply.
