“I forgot I left that thing down here.”
I quickly got up from the table and saw that it was my job calling. I hit ignore and blocked their number. They gave me three days and I planned on taking them. Monday morning in office was when we could speak again.
“Let me guess, that was Evers & Evers Real Estate,” she mocked the movie Haunted Mansion and I cackled.
“Bitch you have issues but yeah, that was Everest calling.”
“Well, you’re not going in. You already said you’re going with me to that party so that’s that. He’ll have to do his job for once.”
“Which is why I ignored his call. I want to enjoy myself this weekend.”
“A few drinks enjoy or drive the boat and be a hoe enjoy?” The way I knew she wanted me to agree to the latter was crazy.
I was the girl that didn’t leave the house unless it was for work and when I was home, I was always in bed. I did want to show Mya that I hadn’t forgot about her or the good times we used to have. College was our fun days, but it seemed like since we came into our careers, we had to schedule quality time. I finally had the time, so I was dedicating it to her.
“Whatever makes you happy, sis’.”
Her eyes grew big, and I could see her excitement meter overflowing. Shaking my head, I put on a smile and allowed herto bum rush me with hugs and kisses. I hated her touchy-feely ways but that was her love language.
“Hurry up and eat so we can hit this mall and find the classiest but ratchet outfit we can find. I can’t wait to see what the night brings.”
Truthfully speaking, I was nervous just as much as I was anxious. Being around folk and strictly socializing wasn’t my thing. However, I wasn’t going to switch up on my girl. We both needed to let loose and allow ourselves to step out of the box we’ve been boxed in for quite some time.
“You said the party is tonight, right? Why do we need a room for a one night only thing when we can just come home?”
“Cause if we meet somebody that we want to blow our back out, we don’t have to go far.”
“Now, what the fuck, Mya?” I was genuinely tickled by her response.
“What? I’m just thinking ahead that’s all.” She shrugged her shoulders as if it was no big deal.
“You had intentions on popping p?—”
“Did!” she yelled, cutting me off. That brought a hearty laugh out of us both.
I threw my hands up in surrender. She was grown and could do whatever she pleased. In college, she used to have moments like this where she didn’t give a fuck about morals or values. She’d let her hair down and do whatever she felt not caring about other’s opinions or feelings behind it. I wasn’t mad at her for wanting to go with the flow for one night.
“You better be glad I’m all game.”
“Oh, trust me. I’m going to take advantage of this.” The devious grin on her face said we were getting into trouble this evening and I had no debate for it.
We finished eating and proceeded to get dressed. The mall was calling our names and I could use a new scenery as well assome sunlight. Regardless of me being a darker woman, I still required the rays to bring me back to life.
I chose to step out in a sweatpants suit from a local store called Karma due to the weather being thirty something degrees. I loved to support the black businesses around town and Karma had a small boutique that didn’t get enough exposure. I put as many people as I could onto it when asked about my fit. My hair was up in a bun, and I was set to go.
After putting my wallet in my clutch, I grabbed my keys and jogged downstairs to wait for Mya. Unlike her and most females, I dressed quickly. That could be because I preferred the everyday look more than dressing to impress. I wasn’t trying to grab anyone’s attention to be honest.
I began to scroll though my Facebook and stopped scrolling when I saw his name. Cam was a man that went without social media. He was a quiet guy and kept his life private. However, I believe he posted so that I could be aware that he was back. I hadn’t seen him since he uttered “I’ll see you later” after our very last date. The following morning, he’d withdrawn from school, changed his number, and left the state. No one, not even Ace who was his best friend heard from him again. That brought on so much heartbreak.
Seeing him say something after so long almost caused my heart to burst. Everything about him hit me at once and I felt my soul cry for him once again. I never allowed him to truly leave my life, so this was the consequences of that. I needed closure before I could accept our departure. He didn’t have the decency to write or send a henchman. I couldn’t get from under the hold he had on me until I received that.
“What happened? Did somebody die?”
Mya ran to me with the look of confusion on her face. She had bad timing like a muthafucka. I shook my head back and forth not wanting to talk about it for real as tears streamed down.
“Why are you crying Harlow? Talk to me.” Mya had always been that caring friend. She wanted to be the mother to all her friends.
“Camden’s back.”
