Sittin’ Up In My Room
Harlow
“Ihave a functioning alarm, Mya. You don’t have to wake me up every day.” I was still laying on my side not wanting to move. I was granted a three-day weekend and wanted to spend it counting as many sheep as I could.
“You say that but if it was up to you, you would never leave this bed. This weekend we’re not doing that. I made us reservations at the Four Seasons. They’re having a Valentine’s Day Soiree for us single folk, which I got a pair of tickets to. We will not be alone this year.”
“I’m perfectly fine with being alone, Mya. I’ve been doing it since college.” I sat up stretching and shaking out my curly locs.
Mya was my best friend and the only person that knew where my heart lied. I didn’t date because of the way he always seemed to invade my thoughts. I thought of him more than I did anything else and wished he’d come back just to give me a refill of him. His presence was missed dearly.
She looked at me giving sympathizing glares. I didn’t need for her to feel sorry for me or even have concern. I was good and wanted to stay that way. With work taking most of my time, I managed to think about him only when my day settled and often when I was alone.
I wouldn’t leave my room some days all because the thought of him would consume me and I couldn’t maneuver properly. I cried more than I wanted, and I prayed daily for a solution, but God never gave me one. Cam left one hell of an impression on me.
“Stop looking at me like that. When it’s time for me to move on, I will.”
“It’s been four years friend. I think it’s time.”
“Five since we’re putting a time frame on it. However, I did enough crying last night so let’s not talk about it please. Today, I just want to do any and everything to make me forget.”
“Which means?” she asked with a half-smile.
“I’m down for this party,” I replied.
She jumped with excitement and threw herself onto my bed, landing in my lap. She was the vitamin I needed in my life. I loved how she always made sure I was good and because she was always full of energy, it tended to rub off on me at times. She wasn’t going to leave me alone about this anyway.
“The party isn’t until seven, but we can show up whenever we’re ready. I got us separate rooms as well.”
“How long have you known about this shindig, Mya?”
“About two weeks. I didn’t tell you until you knew for sure your job was going to give you those days off. God works in mysterious ways don’t he.”
“You got that right. Have you decided on what you’re wearing yet?”
“Nope. We’re going shopping and don’t say you’re broke because your parents just sent you an envelope full of money. I’ll go make breakfast while you handle your morning routine.”
She popped up and gave me a quick peck on the cheek before she skipped out of my room. I shook my head and stepped out of bed. I didn’t know what this weekend would hold but Iwas hoping someone nice could take my mind off the one that slipped away.
Turning on the shower, I let it run to meet the desired temperature. While it heated up, I handled both my mouth and face. My skin was always a challenge on keeping it clear and blemish free but lately I’d been able to manage it.
As I covered my hair with a shower cap, I asked for Alexa to play some tunes. That gave me a little boost for the moment. I stripped down and stepped inside shortly after.
I was surprisingly excited to get the day started. Most days, I forced myself to get up and then coached myself to be proactive. My lazy ass preferred my bed and bed only. I only worked in the office so that my parents wouldn’t be in my face twenty-four seven. They feared I would fall into depression again.
I allowed the warmth of the falling water to officially wake me up. I showered for approximately twenty minutes before I was stepping back out singing along to Monica. Wrapping up in a towel, I headed for my closet to dry off and throw on a robe so I could join Mya for breakfast.
She was the one that knew how to cook between us two and I was glad of it. I found myself eating out or not eating at all because of the rush I was always in no matter the time of day. If it was left up to me, her little self would’ve starved by now.
After slipping into my robe, I jogged downstairs and saw the spread of food along the kitchen table. It was just us that lived in this house, yet she steady cooked like she was feeding a family of five.
“Who is supposed to eat all of this, Mya?” I questioned shaking my head and grabbing a plate to begin.
“We are. I noticed you didn’t come home with anything last night so I figured you could use a plate or two this morning. Sit.”
I did like she asked while she turned down the tunes she had playing for motivation. Everything smelled delicious so I knewfor the first three to five minutes, no discussion would be held. My stomach growling didn’t help the situation. She knew me too well.
Once my plate was heavily coated with food, I said a quick prayer and dug in. The silence was welcomed as we both filled our mouths with the delectable feast. I could kiss Mya in the mouth the way she made sure the grits were buttery as well as cheesy. However, our silence didn’t last long. My cell phone disturbed the peace.
