Chapter 1

Gia

“Alright, class, I think we’re done for the day. You’re free to leave. Have a great Christmas break and remember to be safe. Can’t wait to hear about your holidays when you come back.”

The sounds of scraping chairs and backpacks rustling instantly fill the room.

“Don’t seem too eager to get away from me.” I joke, chuckling as I shake my head, stepping around my desk and moving to sit back in my chair.

“It’s not you, Miss Lock,” one of my students, Liam, shouts. “We’ve just been dying for a school break and Troy is throwing a party tonight.”

“Don’t tell her that.” Tyson, another one of my students, shoves him. “She’s the teacher.”

“Yeah, but she’s Miss Lock. She doesn’t count.”

“I don’t?” I ask, amusement in my tone as I cross my arms. “Why is that?”

“Because you're like what, twenty-five? You're chill.” He shrugs.

“I’ll take that as a complement.” I grin. “But I’m not twenty-five. Try thirty."

“Really?” Liam asks, sounding surprised. “Well shit. You got a banging body for being an old lady.”

My eyes widen as snickers break out around the room.

“What the fuck, man?” Tyson groans. “I’m sorry about him, Miss Lock. Sometimes he doesn’t think before he speaks.”

“Please be mindful of your words and the fact that I’m your teacher, Mr. Thomas.” I direct at Liam.

“Sorry, Miss Lock.” At least he looks genuinely sorry, if the blush to his cheeks is worth anything.

“Go. Have a fun weekend. Be safe. Andnopartying!” I look between the two of them.

“He was just joking,” Tyson lies and I try not to roll my eyes. “No party this weekend. But we are going to a concert." His eyes light up.

“Fuck, man!” Liam says excitedly. “I almost forgot about that.”

“Language,” I remind him.

“Sorry,” he says.

“How could you forget we have tickets to Twisted Destiny! They’re only the best rock band ever.”

“They’re not that good,” I mutter, the reminder that my stepbrother and his band are back in town instantly puts me in a weird mood.

“Are you crazy?” Liam looks at me with wide eyes. “Sorry, Miss Lock. But I don’t think you know your music. I heard you listening to Kesha.”

“Hey!” I defend. “Kesha is great.”

“Ah, yeah sure.” Tyson rubs the back of his neck.

“Whatever. Get out of my class.” I wave them off.

Grabbing their bags, they hurry out of the class.

Once the last student leaves, I let out a heavy sigh.

It’s been a rollercoaster the last couple of weeks with all the prep and getting everyone prepared for their end of semester exams.
