Kit leaned against Red. “Me too. Uh, we need to have a discussion about your costs. Now I realize Tony was broke I guess he didn’t pay you. I can fix that.”

“Your bill’s been taken care of,” Quinn said. “No need to worry.”

Red and Kit exchanged a look.

“I don’t understand,” Kit said slowly.

Nor did Red. He couldn’t begin to imagine how much CDR had charged for this operation.

“Lucinda called me ten minutes ago. She covered the whole bill. She said you reminded her that she still had a life to lead and skills to offer. She really likes you, Kit. Believe me, Josh Cooper says Lucinda never admits to liking anyone.”

Kit smiled. “I like her too. Can I thank her? Is she still here?”

He turned to Red who shrugged. They’d been hiding in the cabin since Tony was taken away, Red had asked Mo to leave them alone for a while, and Red had no idea who was here and who wasn’t.

“She was extracted earlier, but she left a phone number. I’ll send it to Red. I’ve got to go. I’ll catch up with you next week.”

“Wait,” Kit said. “What’s happening to Tony?”

He wasn’t taking his boy anywhere near Tony. He didn’t trust him not to make another attempt on Kit’s life.

“He’s in hospital, under police guard. I’ll tell you when I know more.”

“Are we safe returning home?” Red asked.

“You are. Monroe is well away from Seattle, and the Evergreen Wolves are horrified at what their president did. They all want to talk to you, Kit. I’m sorry, I must go.”

Red heard a soft “Daddy,” before the call disconnected.

He turned to his boy. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired. Angry. Relieved. Still scared that someone is going to come after me.”

Red shook his head. “CDR have confirmed the threats only came from Tony. As Quinn said the rest of the Evergreen Wolvesare horrified by the news, and Little Pete had no idea what Tony had planned. He just thought he wanted to see his brother.”

“He didn’t have any idea what Tony was up to?”

“None. Craig messaged while you were in the shower. Said the guy broke down in tears when he realized he’d driven Tony all the way here only to discover he’d come to kill you.”

Kit sniffled. “I couldn’t believe Little Pete wanted to hurt me. He used to put me to bed.”

Red reached over, grabbed a box of tissues, plucked one out, wiped Kit’s eyes, then held it over his nose. “Blow,” he ordered.

Kit did, kind of awkwardly, then giggled. “Now I do feel like a little boy.”

“When we get home, we’ll talk more about your needs.”

“What if I don’t know what they are?”

“Then we’ll work it out together,” Red promised. “All boys are different. I’ll introduce you to men you would never believe are boys and others who you’d spot instantly.”

Kit regarded him for a moment. “What about me? Which category do I fall into?”

“I knew you were my boy from the moment I covered you in the club.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Red snorted. “You’re the second person to say that to me in five minutes. But to answer the question, you’re a boy who needs control. It’s obvious to anyone.”
