Mack just grunts, opening the menu, and I do the same.

Fifteen minutes later, we’re walking out of the diner with to-go boxes as we head for the B&B. Just like every time we’ve left the room, I feel eyes on us.

It’s beginning to make me a little squirrelly, if I’m being honest. Just before we reach the B&B, I lift my eyes to find the sheriff leaning against his truck as he watches us.

“I get that this place is a safe haven for omegas, but they’re coming off as creepy serial killers or something,” I mutter as we step inside, leaving the sheriff behind.

Ven chuckles but says nothing as he leads us up the stairs.

We all remain silent until we’re all in the room, the door shut behind us.

“Scent matches.” Ven makes it sound like a curse. “We didn’t come here looking for new pack mates.”

“It doesn’t matter what we were or weren’t looking for.” Mack sets the food on the small table and doles out the food to each of us. “They’re our scent matches.”

I settle into one of the chairs at the table, Ven taking the other, and Mack moves to sit on the edge of the bed.

“Yeah, and Luna doesn’t seem happy about it.”

Ven scoffs. “She wouldn’t even look at me or Mack.”

I hum. “My guess? One look at you would’ve revealed that you were scent matches. Neither of them could scent you, so there’s no way for them to know for sure.”

“She doesn’t want us,” Ven sounds pissed, but one look at his face shows the hurt he’s feeling.

“Maybe she just doesn’t want mates,” I say softly, reaching for his hand. “Remember, this is a safe haven for omegas. She lives here for a reason, and she’s one of the founding members. That’s what our contacts told us, and something tells me they didn’t decide to start a town in the middle of nowhere out of the goodness of their hearts. My guess is they went through some shit.”

Mack grunts. “She’s scared. She was trying to hide it, but her scent gave her away.”

Ven sighs, shaking his head as he practically tears the lid off his food before stabbing it with his fork.

I’m not going to lie, it’s kind of cute to watch him eat his food like a toddler who’s throwing a tantrum.

He shoves a few bites into his mouth before setting his fork down. “What are we going to do?”

“It’s not like either of them is going anywhere, Ven. Luna agreed to take our case. We’re going to be working pretty closely with them.” I lift my eyebrows as I glance between my alphas. “I think Mack’s right. Luna, and possibly Prescott, have been through some shit—otherwise they wouldn’t be here. She might suspect that you’re her scent matches, but she doesn’t know for sure. She can’t deny that she’s mine. She agreed to let me come into the office, so let me feel her out. I know she shut me down at the diner, but maybe if we’re somewhere private, she’ll be willing to talk to me. If not her, then maybe Prescott. I’ll see what I can find out.”

Mack nods. “Yeah, that’s smart. Just make sure you’re not an asshole. Try to be charming.”

“I’m always charming.” I gasp, holding my hand to my chest in mock-offense.

Ven snorts. “Yeah, okay, Knight. Whatever you say.”

“I know how to be charming when I need to be. I’ve got this.”

“Sure you do, omega.” Ven smirks before picking up his fork and digging into his food once more. “Twenty bucks says she kicks him out in the first twenty minutes.”

“Nah.” Mack shakes his head. “I think he’ll make it at least an hour.”

I frown, swallowing my bite of burger. “Look here, assholes?—”

“Cool. I’ll put you down for an hour,” Ven says, talking right over me. “Do you wanna bet on why he gets kicked out too?”

Mack taps his chin, as if he’s considering it. “Oh, that’s a harder bet. There’s so many ways he can fuck this up for us.”

“I’m right fucking here, assholes.” I shake my head, even though I know they’re just doing this to piss me off. “This is a terrible way to treat your omega, you know.”

“It’s a good thing you love us, anyway.” Ven’s smirk is back, and while I’m glad he’s feeling better about things, I wish it wasn’t at my expense.
