His exhale is long and slow, carrying with it his tension and worries, at least for the moment. We

both lay there, drifting, supported by Jonas’s cloud-like carpet.

“She’s coming today, Maya,” he says.

“Yeah, she is,” I say grimly. There’s a pool of unease sitting in my stomach. Something about that

woman bothers me. So why the fuck did I push so hard to get her here?Because she’s fucking

brilliant. And I want brilliant for my company. For my brothers. Sure, we have billions, but there’s

no reason why we shouldn’t make more.

If only the woman weren’t so difficult. I don’t have room for difficult in my life. I’ve been chasing

her for months. I don’t chase. Ever.

“You don’t seem happy about it,” he says, frowning at me.

“I’ll be happy if she sticks out the three months, and we can lock her into a contract.”

“Isn’t a three-month probationary period standard? I don’t understand the problem.”

I scrub my hands over my face. “Yeah, I guess they’re standard. But they’re usually for the

employer’s sake. To give us time to see if they’re a good fit and are meeting the expectations of the

job. But that’s not what this is. She required a three-month probationary contract that allows her to

walk away for any reason. I feel like I’m going to spend the next few months jumping through hoops

for this woman. I don’t fucking like it.”

“That’s why she’s staying here, then?”

“Yeah. If she decides to stay after the probation is done, she’ll find her own place. For now, the

job comes with one of the apartments.”

“Did you fix one up?”

I roll onto my side, propping my head in my hands. “Why would I fix one up? It’s got everything

she needs in it already.”

“Colt fixed up Evie’s apartment.”

“Colt’s an obsessive fucker who was half in love with Evie before he ever met her.”

He hums. “There is that.”

“Maybe we just give her that one.” I peek at my watch. “She should be here soon. Her flight

landed an hour ago.”

Jonas grunts and does some weird plank to a one-handed handstand to rise to his feet.

“What the fuck was that, brother?”
