“Hamun.”
One single word. I frowned, confused. No?How could he be so sure? Were Gemins reproducing in a…different way?
“But you—”
The words died in my throat as voices sounded from the little tunnel to our side.Okay, that’s a discussion for later, then. And after all, it would be easier to discuss all this if I understood him, that way he wouldn’t have to use single word sentences.
“Miss Winsbur?” one of the men emerging behind Baelorasked.
“Yes.” I smiled, and grabbed Baelor’s hand as he walked near Nitochi and I. His brows shot up in surprise, but he didn’t resist when I pulled him to sit on the cushions with us.
“It’s good to see they managed to find you unharmed.”
Nitochi’s throat rumbled in my back before he mumbled something that I didn’t understand but that made the three men in white coats blanch.
The one who had spoken nodded. “We’ll do a quick examination today, but when you go to the space station soon, we’ll be able to do a full check-up.”
“Thank you,” I answered, grateful.
Nitochi tensed behind me. He wasn’t brushing my hair anymore, both of his arms surrounding my middle to keep my back plastered to his chest.
They kept giving him wary looks, hesitating as they kneeled on the floor in front of me.
“We’ll start by updating your translator,” the first man said as the others opened little boxes to take out various equipment. Once he had the small device in his hand, he looked toward Nitochi again, hands up in a placating way. “Okay?”
I looked over my shoulder, confused. The gleam in my dark knight’s eyes was nothing if not threatening. Baelor was muttering under his breath, closing his eyes like he was already tired of this.
Finding his large hand pressing on my stomach, I slid mine over and caressed his knuckles with mythumb. Our gaze met then, and I gave him a reassuring smile.
“Okay,” I said to the man.
He still hesitated as he brought the beeping device closer to the spot behind my ear and stilled. Waiting.
“It’ll just take a minute,” he said. His hand was shaking. I kept rubbing Nitochi’s skin to try and appease him. The man retreated and pressed on a few buttons before giving me a nod and giving it back to the one just behind him. “Okay, it’s being updated now. You haven’t been here long, but the communication must have been difficult…”
I chuckled. “Sometimes…” I couldn’t help but blush as I looked at Nitochi over my shoulder.Words aren’t always necessary.Baelor returned my smile when I turned to him. “Baelor has been translating when needed.” Although, he kept some of Nitochi’s words to himself…
“Baelor, like most of the other day Gemins, has been learning our language from a young age,” the man said. There was something kind in his voice that told me he had been around for a long time. Maybe even when my future husbands were children. “He’ll be a great lead for your new family.”
My head tilted to the side. “Lead?”
Baelor winced. “Actually, we—”
“I am the lead.”
My eyes widened as I turned around sharply.I can understand him.Shit, his voice, even in words I could actually comprehend, was still so damn hot I was kind of mad other people were in the room. I had been scared that the translator would somehow change it.Glad it didn’t.
We stared at each other in silence for a few beats. “Hi,” I finally said, voice barely loud enough for even myself to hear.
A small smile tugged at his lips. “Hi.”
The man cleared his throat, catching our attention. “Well, I guess this particular issue is settled. I’ll need do to a quick exam and give you a couple of injections, if you—”
“What injections?” Nitochi growled, the sound sending vibration from his rumbling chest to my back.
Two of the three men actually looked terrified of him. The other one seemed more and more annoyed.
“She’s never traveled outside of her colony before,” the older man who’s been speaking from the beginning explained. “All the brides need to get vaccinated.”
