“Then give me thecode.”
“Five, seven, six,two.”
Saber watched themonitor as he punched in the numbers. When the alarm beeped off, hepushed against the metal bar, and the Savages smiled as theyprepared to enter.
CHAPTER 18
Saber stepped backso they couldn’t see he was the one who opened the door. They mustnot be too smart as the first one who came through the door wasstill smiling. A garbage aroma wafted from it, but the scent wasn’tas strong as what emitted from those much farther gone in theirSavagery.
The malicioussmile splitting the bastard’s face when he spotted Caro caused awhite-hot fury to blaze through Saber. He knew exactly what thisthing would do to her if it got its hands on her, and he wouldneverallow it.
As the secondSavage, who smelled slightly worse than the first, stepped throughthe door, Saber seized the first by the back of its head and bashedits face off the wall. Plaster shattered, and white dust rained asthe Savage’s arms and legs shot out like a lightning bolt hithim.
The second Savagetried to lift his gun, but Saber grabbed the creature by the shirtand yanked it through the door. Releasing the shirt, Saber graspedthe fucker’s throat, grabbed the closing door, and slammed itshut.
As soon as it wasclosed, Saber shoved the one he was holding to the ground andturned to the first one. The Savage was starting to pull himselfout of the wall when Saber gripped its head and twisted its neck tothe side, snapping it.
The Savage wentdown like he’d torn out its spine, and he would gladly do so afterthe look it had given Caro. It wouldn’t survive long enough to haveany more fantasies about what it would do to her.
Saber removed astake from the inside pocket of his leather coat and drove itthrough the Savage’s heart. The second Savage was scrambling forthe door when he caught it and dragged him down.
Kneeling on thepiece of shit’s chest, Saber placed the tip of his stake over theSavage’s heart. “How many of you are there?” he demanded.
Caro blinked asshe tried to process everything. She was a twenty-seven-year-old,purebred, powerful vampire, and Saber had moved so fast she barelysaw him take the vamps down.
And then, as herastonishment over what happened waned, the scent of garbage caughther attention, and her nose wrinkled. It wasn’t overwhelming, butit was there. Saber had said he was once a Savage, yet he didn’tsmell likethesethings. Her dad was right; they did smellawful.
“How many more ofyou are here?” Saber demanded again when the Savage stared blanklyup at him.
“Tw-tw-two,” thecoward stammered out.
Saber took that tomean at least four; he doubted there were more, but it waspossible. They came here in search of Caro. They hadn’t expectedhim, but they also didn’t know who he was. They wouldn’t have triedto come in here if they did, not without backup.
If they’d known, they would have arrived with a small army as they’d give anythingto have him back in their clutches. No one left them; they wouldmake him pay for doing so, and not by turning him into a Savagelike they were doing with so many other vampires.
They would rip outhis fingernails, cut him into tiny pieces, and torture him foryears before finally ending his existence. He wasn’t going out thatway.
“Did you havesomething to do with the death of Charles and his mate?” Saberdemanded.
“Who?”
Saber pressed thetip of his stake into the Savage’s flesh. Blood broke free, but hedidn’t stop. The Savage squirmed as it issued pathetic, gruntingnoises like a pig heading toward slaughter… and that’s exactly whatthis thing was.
Saber leaned hisknee harder into the Savage’s chest and pinned his arm under thebeast’s chin. It stopped squealing but continued to flail.
“Don’t fuck withme,” Saber snarled. “Did you have something to do with the death ofCharles and his mate?”
He eased up on thepressure so the Savage could talk again.
“Why should I tellyou anything? You’re going to kill me anyway!” the Savage blurtedin a raspy, whiny voice.
“True.” Sabergrasped the man’s hand. “But I can make it fast orreallypainful.”
And with that, hejerked the Savage’s hand to the side, cracking the bones in itswrist and nearly driving them through the creature’s flesh. Whenthe Savage howled, Saber leaned on its throat, cutting off allsound.
When Caro gasped, his gaze flew up as she squeezed her eyes shut. They remained thatway for only a second before opening again to meet his.
The horror inthose turquoise eyes tugged at a heart he’d believed dead, but hedidn’t ease up on his treatment of the Savage. If he did, theywouldn’t get the answers they required, and this thing would gladlytry to kill them. It hadnoshot of taking him out, but itwould try, and she could get hurt.
