“Maybe we shouldleave out the front,” she whispered.
“There’s more outthere.”
“How do you knowthat?”
“Because I knowhow they work.”
Because he wasonce one of them? But no matter what he said, that was impossible, wasn’t it?
Her father saidonce Savages became monsters, they stayed that way. And hecertainly wouldn’t ever make a weapon for a Savage; hedespisedthem.
Saber pulled hisknife free of its holster again. “They probably saw me enter butdon’t know who I am.”
“Why do you saythat?”
“Because therewould be a lot more than two of them.”
“Youjustsaid there’s some out front.”
When he glancedback at her, the room’s dim light caught on his cobalt eyes, makingthem almost glow. He looked like some blue-eyed, avenging grimreaper sent to mete out punishment.
“They’d havemoreon the back door if they knew whoIam,” he toldher. “They’d have an army.”
Caro’s eyebrowsshot up, but despite sounding like a brutal monster, his confidencewas attractive. And then she realized she was losing her mind. Sheshould be running from this man, and this whole situation, insteadof admiring his bravado.
“You said youdon’t know them; is there any way they know who you are?” heasked.
Caro opened hermouth to say no, but then her mind flashed to her father’s walletlying open to her picture. “My father’s wallet was beside his body.It was open to one of my pictures in it.”
“Then they know ofyour existence, and that’s why they’re here. They’ve probably beenwatching over the place, waiting for you to return.”
“Why?”
“They wantedsomething from Charles, and now they’ll try to get it from you ifthey can.”
“Just likeyou.”
He shot her avicious look. “I’mnothinglike them.”
But that’s nottrue. He wasn’t a Savage anymore, but he was a brutal killerand still craved death as much now as he did then. He just didn’tkill humans anymore.
“They probablydon’t know who I am.”
“If you weren’tCharles’s mate, then you were his daughter. There’s no reason hewould have your picture otherwise. They know. Are there any othersiblings they might go after?”
“No.” When henodded and turned away from her, she stopped him. “What are yougoing to do?”
“I’m going to killthem.”
Caro glanced atall the things gathered within this room. This was once a place oflove; now, it was a place of blood, violence, and death. Even ifshe would never return, she didn’t want any more blood spilledhere.
“What’s thesecurity code?” Saber asked as he stopped beside the door.
“The police mightscare them off. There doesn’t have to be any more death inhere.”
“Or the Savagescould slaughter them. They don’t care about who they kill or themess they leave behind. They probably had something to do with yourparents’ deaths; don’t you want answers?” Saber asked.
Caro swallowed thelump in her throat. “I do.”
