Smith bit his lip. “I don’t know. I need to contact Jacob, but we’re headed back to the interrogation rooms at McKillan House. All of us.”

Oh no.

“He’s going to make me do it, isn’t he?”

Smith fixed Cole with a worried expression. “Honestly, with the way things are looking, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re interrogated right alongside him.”

Cole’s heart raced, thumping against his rib cage, and he sucked in breath after breath.

“Calm down,” Smith hissed at him.

Cole glared at him. “Telling me things like that isn’t exactly helping.”

“Sorry.” Smith leant forward, looking out the window. “What the fuck are they talking about?”

Cole turned to see Paul and Rich talking animatedly next to the car. “Do you think Rich knew?”

“No.” Smith narrowed his eyes. “At least I hope not, because if he did and he didn’t tell me, then we’re in some serious fucking trouble.”

They watched as Paul nodded and walked away to the last SUV while Rich opened the front passenger side door.

“Fuck me,” Rich said, letting out a slow whistle. “Did you know about this?” he asked, looking at Smith.

“No, did you?”

“No way. I thought we’d get here, have a quick chat, maybe threaten them a little, and be home by half eight.” His gaze slid to Cole. “That’s your best mate, right? He was at the funeral?”

Cole nodded.

Rich shook his head, a smirk curving his mouth. “Bet you’re shitting yourself right about now.”

Absolutely.

“Why?” Cole shrugged a shoulder. “Apart from the funeral, I haven’t seen Nick in well over a month. I didn’t even know he’d been bitten.”

“How long have you known him?”

Cole looked away, Rich’s gaze far too intense. “Since primary school.”

He whistled again. “That’s a long time. And best mates tend to tell each other everything.”

Not always.

There’s plenty of things I haven’t told him. And vice fucking versa.

“Obviously not,” Cole answered, raising his hands in the air. “Maybe it’s all a huge misunderstanding. I can’t believe the Nick I knew would be involved in something like this.” And that was the truth.

Cole couldn’t picture it.

As hard as he tried to see the signs, clues he might have missed over the last few months, years, he kept coming up blank.

If Nick was a member of the CEG, then he was far better at lying than Cole ever would be.

“I guess we’ll soon find out.” Rich turned around and faced forwards.

Cole slumped back in his seat. The words burning into his brain.

Fuck.
