Logan handeda water to Aaron and sank down onto the sofa.

“Thanks.”

He checked the time on his phone. “They’re probably there by now. Whereverthereis.”

Aaron sighed. “Probably.”

“Do you think he’s met with the CEG?” Logan bit his lip, doing his best to ignore the worry threatening to take hold. It was a regular recon mission according to Smith. Go in, scare the shit out of some humans, get out. Logan fidgeted, picking at the label on his water bottle before setting it down.

“I think—”

Logan’s phone vibrated on the table next to his water.

Hisotherphone.

They both looked at it in growing horror. Only Jacob had that number, and he’d never use it unless it was an emergency.

“Fuck.” Logan snatched it up and answered. “Hello.”

“Is Aaron there?” Jacob said, not wasting time on pleasantries.

“Yes.”

“Put me on speaker, there’s not much time.”

“Done.” Logan set his phone down between them.

“The mission Paul took Cole on was a decoy. They had intel on a CEG shifter cell and went after them at the same time.”

“What the—”

“Two shifters got away, but Paul’s team captured a third.” Jacob paused, and Logan just knew it was going to be bad. “It’s Nick.”

“Nick?”Nooo, it can’t be. “Cole’s Nick?”

“Yes.” Jacob’s heavy sigh was so unlike him, Logan felt the stirrings of panic. “They’ve arrested him and are on their way back to the interrogation rooms at McKillan House.”

“What about Cole?”

“I don’t know, Logan. But it’s not going to look good for him.”

Fuck fuck fuck.

Logan wanted to shift, wanted to yell, scream, roar the place down, anything other than sit there on the fucking phone. Aaron’s hand landed on his shoulder, grip bordering on painful. “Calm down. Let Jacob speak.”

He took a breath, then another, still vibrating in place but not in danger of shifting. “What do we do?”

Jacob sighed again, resigned. “Paul’s not stupid. Cole tried to escape with help from the CEG. His best mate just happens to be a member. They’re going to assume he knew and that he lied. You have to get him out of there.”

Logan looked at Aaron, mouth hanging open as the rising dread clawing its way up his throat threatened to choke him. “But—”

“I know it’s not what we planned, but if you leave him there, odds are Paul will interrogate him too, using whatever methods he sees fit.” Jacob’s voice was strained, as though this was taking time they really didn’t have. He paused, and when he spoke again his voice was quiet, softer. “You haven’t seen the very worst of their interrogation techniques, Logan. If either Nick or Cole spill their secrets, I have no idea how many lives could be put at risk.”

Logan shared a look with Aaron. “If we break him out, then we’re done here.” They’d have to leave London. Michael would have all the packs looking for them, and if caught, shifter prison would be the best outcome they could expect.

They’d lose their friends, their pack.
