“If I tell you what you want to know,” Cole hedged, no hesitation in answering this time, “can I talk to my parents?” He had to ask. The others would’ve been suspicious otherwise. Logan doubted it’d been the first time he’d asked to speak to them.

Logan glanced over at Jez, letting him decide. He caught the flicker of regret in his eyes.

“We’ll sort something out,” Jez said after a pause.

“And Nick?” Cole asked quickly, not looking at Logan because this they definitely hadn’t talked about.

What the hell are you doing, Cole?

“He’s my best friend. I just want to know if he’s okay. Find out what pack he joined.”

Again Logan looked to Jez to answer.

He did so with a sigh. “Just answer the fucking questions, Cole. Then we’ll talk.”

Blowing out a deep breath, Cole winced and ran his tongue over the spot where his fang was growing back. “We were smuggled out in the back of a van. I didn’t get told names, and they hid their faces where possible.”

Logan sat in front of him on the floor, listening to Cole spin the story he, Aaron, and the others had gone over countless times on the journey back to London. Any time Cole faltered or finished speaking, Logan was quick to jump in with another question. As long as he asked them, he could steer the interview in the right direction.

Stolen glances at the others in the room suggested they were convinced by Cole’s explanation. Or they appeared to be, at least.

Only time would tell whether Simon felt the same when they reported back to him.

Would it be enough for Michael to let Cole join his pack?

I really fucking hope so.
