“Ok,” I whispered. “I’ll leave.”

“For fuck’s sake, Kate, that’s not what I meant. I mean trust me. I’m fucking crazy about you.” Half turning to the room full of bikers, he raised his focus. “Hey, assholes!” he shouted until the nearest people turned to stare at him quizzically. “This woman here is amazing and I am head over heels in love with her.”

Blushing, I tried to pull him away. “Legacy, stop.”

I hid my face in his chest, trying to hide my embarrassment, but he didn’t stop.

“If I ever look at another woman, you all have permission to punch me.”

A cheer went up.

“There, sorted. I love you, Kate. I wish you believed me.”

“I want to, it's just so new and…”

“It’s scary for me as well, Kate. I’ve never been in love before,” he admitted. I lifted my head.

“You mean it, don’t you?”

“Of course I mean it.” He shook his head in disbelief. “What can I do to get you to believe me?” Cocking his head to the side, he grinned. “We could get married.”

Laughing, I shook my head. “You’re crazy.”

“Crazy about you.” He kissed the tip of my nose before moving down to find my lips with his, softly brushing them before withdrawing. “Rain check on the wedding thing then, hey?”

“Definitely.” I curled my hands into his hair, drawing his head down to mine so I could capture his mouth in a much deeper kiss. “I’m sorry I got jealous.”

“Jealousy is normal, Kate, but in the future, ask me first. I'll always tell you the truth.” One last kiss and he stepped away. “So, as you’ve declined my proposal, can I at least take you to dinner?”

Staring at him for a second, I felt myself melting. I was in love with him. I hadn’t expected it and I sure as hell hadn’t wanted to fall for my husband's friend, but I had. It was like it was always meant to be, me and him. Two people who missed Paul. Two people who had loved him.

“Kate?” He raised an eyebrow, clearly waiting for my answer.

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak straightaway. “Yeah,” I managed. Tears welled up in my eyes again, but this time they were happy tears. “I would like that. And Legacy? I love you too.”

Chapter Sixteen

Legacy

“Where are we going?”

I could feel her eyes on me. Searching the dark interior of the car for a clue in my expression.

I had decided a car was better for tonight, not my bike like I would have wanted. It was almost suffocating to me, but for her I would do anything. Tonight, she needed the safety of the car.

There were going to be tears. I already knew that. I just had to hope that by the end of the night, they would be happy tears.

“Legacy.” Leaning forward, she peered through the windscreen. I could tell by the thickness of her voice that she was starting to recognise the area. “Elliot.”

Yeah, she knew where we were going.

Reaching out, I found her hand and drew it into my lap, keeping a tight hold of it.

“Why are we…?” She took a deep, shaky breath as I turned off the main road and approached gates that were locked up tight and blocking our way. “Why are we here?”

“Because you always see Paul on your birthday, Kate. And this year I want to go with you. I'll come and talk to him as well, you know...” My voice trailed off.

“You don’t mind?” She sounded so unsure of herself. Almost like she couldn’t believe her ears. In answer, I brought her hand to my lips.
