The mattress moved as he heaved himself up onto his elbow. I could feel his eyes on me but I didn’t turn to look at him. I was too scared he would see the jealousy on my face if I did.

“They weren't you, Iris.”

“So, a few then.” I chuckled. “I'm not jealous or anything,” I lied. “But it does prove my point.”

“Yes, you are jealous, Iris, and that's ok. I was jealous as well when I heard you were on a date, but doesn't that show you that there's still something between us?”

Finally, I shot a glance in his direction and our eyes met. It was me that looked away first. “It shows that we are both fools who need to let go of the past.”

“Maybe, or maybe it means we should try again. No pressure. No commitment.” He held up a hand.

My eyebrows slammed down. “No commitment? So you can...” I didn't even know why I was thinking about it. Being with Cyber would bring me nothing but more heartache. I hadn't been lying when I had said I would do anything to get my child back. I would burn the world to ashes if I needed to. The last thing I needed was to fall for the man who had started it all. That wasn't part of the plan.

“I'm not going to touch another woman, Iris, that's not what I meant. Just give me a chance, get to know me. Let me be there when I get our kid back. And when she's back, you can make a decision.”

Turning to him fully, I met his eyes. “I will do anything to get her back, Cyber.”

Sadness flickered in his eyes, sadness and something unreadable. He smiled wryly. “I know you will, baby.” Gathering me into his arms, his chin came down to rest on the top of my head. “And whatever you need to do is fine. It’s all going to be fine. I promise.”

“I don't have long.”Wearily, I took my seat at the table, eyeing my brothers each in turn as they turned their faces towards me. This wasn't church. This was just a set number of men who Fang trusted.

I probably wouldn't have been one of them, but I was closer to Iris than any of the others, well, apart from Monster, and he was too much of a loose cannon to be involved.

“You're going back to her then?”

I shrugged. What kind of question was that? Of course I was going back. I wasn't going to let Iris out of my sight for long.

“What have you found out?” Fang was straight down to business as always.

“The kid that was found isn't Violet.” I couldn't help the sigh of relief that escaped my lips.

Fang leant forward. “Monster filled us in last night when he came back here. You stayed the night with her, didn't you?”

I shrugged again. “She needed someone.”

Why did it feel like I was being interrogated? I wasn't on trial.

“So, is Fang’s hunch right? Why is she really here?”

Across the table, Havoc turned his head to the side, refusing to meet my eyes.

“She's here to find her kid,” I said each word slowly, like I was talking to imbeciles, and my tone wasn't lost on Fang. His eyes narrowed threateningly.

“That's not what I'm asking. Is she working with The Family?”

Letting out a rattling sigh, I kicked my legs out. But I didn't answer him.

“Cyber, you were meant to find out her motives, not get your dick sucked. Is she a threat to the club or not?” Fang's voice was growing louder, his anger taking over. Most people mellowed with age, but not Fang. He was just as fiery as he had been in his twenties.

“One,” I held up a hand, “I didn't get my dick sucked. I didn't even touch her. I don't know how much of her story is true, but whatever has happened to her has traumatised her.” My eyes scanned the faces staring at me. “And two,” I held up another finger, “yeah, she's a threat to us. Whatever they have asked her to do, they are holding Violet until it's done.” I hated even saying the words. But I knew they were true.

“She told you?”

I glanced at Havoc like he was stupid. “Of course she didn't tell me out right. She knows doing that would be instant death. I heard her mumble something about them promising her more time.” Even saying the words was hell.
