I had hurt her feelings. Usually, such a thing wouldn’t have bothered me. I had made a name for myself by being ruthless. Caring about other people’s feelings hadn’t got me where I was today.

“You misunderstand me, Bree.” I squeezed her chin between my thumb and forefinger, lifting her head and giving her no choice but to meet my eyes. Hers skirted away just like I knew they would. She was so good, it was almost cliched. The perfect little omega. I did not doubt that her father had trained her from a young age, in how to look and act.

“You are far too beautiful to have such a plain name.”

“I was given my mother’s name.” Her eyes flashed in anger. A spark igniting before she blinked it away. There was a fire in her, I could tell. Buried deep beneath the good girl exterior. “And she was very beautiful. I think it’s a beautiful name and I am honoured to have it in her memory.”

Yeah, there was definitely fire in her. It excited me and angered me in equal measure.

A low growl spilt from my lips, a menacing sound that made her eyes widen and her lips snap shut.

It wasn’t the terrified look on her face that excited me though, it was the way her thighs squeezed together under the long dress.

The smell of her arousal filling my nostrils made me growl again. Forgetting everyone else I stepped forward. I thrust my nose against the skin of her throat, one hand closing around her hip to bring her into my body.

“Alpha Kaelan.” The old man, who was her father, was hovering at my elbow. His hands flapping at the sight of me manhandling his daughter. Not that I cared. I had to know.

“Alpha Kaelan, I must insist you let go of my daughter. You are a guest in my house and….” he fell silent as my head whipped around. The growl that had so turned on his daughter only seconds before causing him to take a hasty step back.

“She is an unclaimed omega, I would think you are both used to an Alphas attention.” I let my eyes find hers again, loving the way a blush crept up her cheeks. She knew what I was talking about, they both did. But it was her small hand that came out of nowhere to slap my face. It didn’t make contact. I caught her wrist easily. Pulling it above her head harshly.

“Now that is not very hospitable is it?” My fingers dug into her flesh, I knew I was hurting her. But having a few slight marks on her skin was nothing compared to what I would have done to others who dared to strike me. “I am your honoured guest here. I think.” I let go of her so suddenly that she stumbled back into her father’s waiting arms. “That you may need to take your daughter in hand Beta and teach her some manners before someone does it for you.” My threat was clear. “If she attempts to strike me again I will discipline her.”

Never in my life had I wanted anyone to strike me again as much as I did at that moment. The idea of Bree spread out over my lap waiting for her punishment was enough to make me swell uncomfortably against my zipper.

“I apologise Alpha Kaelan. I forgot myself. Please….”

I didn’t let her finish. “Part of me thinks you want to be taken in hand Bree.” I was goading her but I just couldn’t seem to help myself.

Again her eyes flashed but she didn’t say a word. Her lips snapped shut. Her head lowered. “Yes, Alpha.”

Oh, she played her part well. I would give her that. But I wasn’t fooled. “Come then, show us to our rooms. I would like to wash up before our meal.”

“You know you can’t have her right?”

With a growl, I turned towards the man who spoke. He was one of my most trusted men, Someone I had trained up since I had found him in the gutter. Much like I had been found. Unlike me, he wasn’t strong enough to lead.

“I can have anyone I want to.” I shouldn’t have to remind him that I took what I wanted when I wanted. I just wasn’t the kind of man who asked permission.

“She is protected Kaelan. No alpha can take her without her father’s and her permission. I heard a rumour that she is being lined up for the Holy One.”

I didn’t bother asking where he got his information. Zane always seemed to know what was happening outside our territory. It was one of the reasons I kept him close. “She is being given to the Monk?” I didn’t even try and keep the derision from my voice.

“So I have heard.” Zane was too busy frowning at me to notice the sudden shift in my body as my shoulders straightened.

“We shall see.”

His eyes locked with mine. “You are going to do something stupid aren’t you?”

Laughing, I threw my head back. “Probably, there’s no way I am letting the Monk have her. She should be with an alpha who can protect her.” The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

“Think with your actual brain Kaelan. If you take her by force then you could start a war. You are many things but a rapist has never been one of them.”

Rapist? My eyes narrowed. What was he talking about? I was many things, criminal and killer among them but I had never raped a woman in my life. “Who said anything about Rape, Zane? I think it’s time that I took a mate or my own don’t you?” Smiling at him, I continued to finish dressing.

“And you want her? Why because she is meant for a man you hate or because she is your mate?”
