Tenderly I smoothed the hair from her forehead. And her eyes widened even more.
“You ….” she swallowed hard like it was painful. I could see her throat convulse as she tried again to speak.
“Just rest Bree, everything will be fine.” Again I let my hand run across her damp hair. Smoothing it back from her face again and again.
“You came for me.” She finally managed.
“Of course, I don’t share what is mine, Bree. I never have. And I don’t think I’m going to start now with you.”
“Even though I don’t want to be your mate? Even though I don’t want to be the wife of an Outlaw?”
Her words cut deep, but my hand didn’t stop. “Even then. Fate has spoken Bree. You might not want me now. But you will… one day you will love me….” My words trailed off as I stared at her. At first, I didn’t know what was going on. It seemed to happen in slow motion but at the same time, it happened in a blink of an eye.
Her eyes rolled into the back of her head. Her back arched almost painfully from my lap. Bree’s mouth opened in a scream that was so full of pain it ripped my insides out.
Slick fell from her in a gush, soaking the thick material of her robes. It was the most violent thing I had ever seen. And I had seen a lot of violence. Bree’s bones cracked as she contorted her body to try and find some release from the pain.
“What the hell is going on back there?” Zane’s voice was panicked, gritty. I Could hear him breathing through his mouth as the scent of her hormones flooded the car.
“She’s in estrus.” I ground my teeth together as I fought my own urges. “Get us the hell home Zane now.”
The last thing I wanted was to go into rut here. To lose control and take her like biology dictated I did. Because I knew, I KNEW that this estrus was wrong.
I clung to her, trying to keep her body still against mine and fight against my own biology at the same time. If I was struggling I knew Zane must be as well. But he didn’t turn, the only sign that he felt anything at all was the fact that he was gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white.
It might have been five minutes but it felt like five hours before we finally pulled up in front of the building I called home. And people were waiting for me, just like I knew there would be.
The car door was pulled open and several pairs of hands reached in to pull Bree out. I wanted to fight them all. Smash their teeth into the back of their throats for daring to touch me mate. Especially now she was in heat but I bit back the urge. They were there to help her, on my orders.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with her but this isn’t right.” I motioned to her thrashing frame, the material covering her drenched in her slick.
“She’s in heat?”
I wanted to scream at him, “just stabilise her. Something happened to her and she is struggling…. she needs to …” I shook my head. It was getting harder and harder to concentrate on anything the tantalising smell coming from her. “Ease her pain so I can tend her through her heat.”

“Kaelan?”
My head shot up, and the doctor paused mid-step. His eyes roving over me. I knew what he saw. How haggard I looked. My eyes had been red-rimmed and bloodshot when I had got out of the shower. That had been hours ago. And I had been waiting for news ever since.
“How is she?” I knew she was alive at least. The aroma of her slick had been filling my lungs with every breath. But that was all I knew.
“It’s not good, Kaelan…” His eyes skirted away.
He was afraid of telling me I realised with a start. It was that bad that he was afraid of telling me.
“Can I sit?”
I answered his question with one of my own. “Can I go into her?” I knew I sounded impatient, heartless almost but I didn’t mean it that way. I just knew that she would need me to tend her through her heat.
And of course, I would be lying if I didn’t want to tend her. I was holding onto my control by the skin of my teeth. Any other man would have given in to the rut by now. But I wasn’t any man. I was the alpha Kaelan, the Outlaw. My control was legendary.
“No, not yet.” The much smaller beta man swallowed hard. “I must talk to you about her first.” He took another deep breath. “They have ripped her apart inside Kaelan. I have never seen damage like it. Whoever examined her…” He trailed off. “They are no Doctor they are a butcher.” He sounded genuinely disgusted. And that more than anything else caused my hackles to rise.
“What do you mean they ripped her apart?”
“I don’t know what they used, some kind of abrasive material. Internally she is a mess. It will take her months to recover. And even then I can’t guarantee that she will ever be able to be a true mate to you. There might not be any chance of children or even … a healthy physical relationship between the two of you. There is no way of knowing until she starts to heal.”
