There was blood on her thighs? Had he forced himself on her? Taken my mate against her will?
“I have not touched her.” He held his hands up in front of him. On any other man it would have been a submissive gesture but not with the Monk. There wasn’t a submissive bone in his giant body. “My doctor said she was a virgin still and rapidly going into estrus…. I assumed that her fever was due to that?”
“And you thought it was a good idea to lay her on the floor and let her suffer? Why? To make some point to me?” The gun pointed at his head didn’t waver. “The only point you proved was how much of an asshole you are.”
“I never thought I would see the day where you had real emotions Outlaw. I didn’t even think it was possible.”
His words made me pause. He wasn’t the only one who was going to be shocked by how possessively protective I could be. I was shocked as well. But then again, I had never had a mate before. I had never felt the need to be protective. It was always every man for themselves.
“Only with her.” My chin jutted towards the woman in my arms. “No one else, just my mate.”
Slowly the Monk blinked. “I see…” his eyes scanned over her limp body. “Then I release her from any contract her father put in place…” his eyes met mine. “But I will expect an omega of my choice in return.”
“I don’t care about any other Omega. Now tell me what the hell this doctor of yours said?” I forced my heart to calm as I listened to him.
“And you let this doctor alone with her? To examine her?” How was it possible that he could be so stupid? I would never leave Bree alone with another man. She was too precious. Too special to me.
“The Doctor is a woman. Someone I trust with my life. She has never let me down.”
“I hope for your sake that this is true because if I find out differently then I will peel the skin from your bones and feed you it.”
He waved my threat away with a small smile. “Go, Outlaw. Get yourself out of my territory before I change my mind and kill you now. Oh and Kaelan?”
I turned to him, my eyebrow raised.
“Don’t come back without an invite”

I didn't need telling twice. Holding Brees limp body to my chest I didn't look back as I swept through the main room and down the long hallway. Omegas scattered out of my way. Their heads lowered as my growls filled the space.
I had been half expecting to leave Zane to get his fill, so I was glad when he stepped out of the shadows in front of me. His eyes sweeping over Bree’s body. He didn’t say anything and neither did I. He knew what he had to do. Get us out of here. And quickly.
I wasn’t medically trained but I knew the Bree was in a bad way. Anyone with eyes would be able to see that she didn’t have long. Whatever had happened to her in the days she had been missing, it had been bad.
Really really bad.
“Where?” Zane paused, the rain making his blond hair stick to his forehead in spikes.
That was the question, wasn’t it? Where the hell could I take her? But in the end, it was a null question. There was only one place I could take her, a place where I could guarantee her safety. If the last few days had taught me anything at all it was that the people surrounding Bree couldn’t be trusted. Not one of them.
That was fine though, she didn’t need any of them. All she needed was me.
“Home.” We might not have the best of medical care in my manor but I trusted the people around me explicitly. I would not trust anyone else around my mate now.
“Not back to her father’s?” Zane paused, a small line appearing between his eyebrows. “Wouldn’t it be better for her to….”
I cut him off. “No.” I snapped. “I’m taking her home where she belongs.”

It seemed to take forever to get across the city. Although I knew it wasn’t much more than an hour. It would have taken much longer back in the cities hay day or so I had been told. When cars clogged up the roads but that was centuries ago. Before the world had changed. There were few vehicles on the crumbling roads now.
I hadn’t been idle on the journey back either, I had been making calls the entire time. Bree sleeping fitfully on my lap. Her face bathed in sweat.
“Kae-lan.”
Her voice was croaky, barely a whisper but the sound of it shocked me. I had thought she had been asleep. So it was startling to see her tear-filled eyes staring up at me.
