The Outlaw made me want to lose control. Or more specifically he made me want to hand over control to him.

I had been raised to be obedient but to also know my own mind. And above all, I had been raised to be a lady.

“Bree?” The weathered old face that came into view was frowning. “What are you doing here child?”

“I need your help…” nervously I glanced behind me. Expecting at any moment for Kaelan’s hulking form to materialise out of the shadows. “Please.”

Why wasn’t she opening the door? This woman had raised me from an infant and yet she was staring at me like I was a stranger.

“Why are you here Bree?”

It came out in a rush, a jumble of words. I told her all of it. The Outlaw’s appearance in our home. The way he had made me feel. The fact that my father had given me to him. And lastly how his hands punishing me had made me feel. I left nothing out and the entire time she continued to stare at me from the crack in her door.

“I see… and did he take you?” Her eyes scanned my dress.

“No, but ….” I faltered. Why was she looking at me like she was? “My father warned you I would come, didn’t he? Is he coming for me?”

“Not him Bree. I do not work for him. My loyalty has always been to the Monk.” Wrinkled fingers clamped around my arm. “He will be here to collect you soon. I just hope for your sake that he finds you untouched.”

“You betrayed me.” How was it possible that I had never seen the hatred in her eyes before now. She had raised me, been like a Mother to me. To have her betray me now hurt more than I thought was possible. “Why?”

The hand that came out of the darkness to cover my mouth and nose with a foul chemical-smelling cloth took me by surprise. There was no time to scream. No time to struggle.

“Because I pay much better than anyone else in this city.”

Darkness took my vision quickly but not before I had recognised that voice.

I woke up suddenly, or at least I thought I was awake it was hard to tell when I couldn’t see a thing. There was nothing but blackness. It took me several long seconds to realise that a hood had been placed over my eyes.

The realisation did nothing to calm my erratic heartbeat.

“Close your eyes, Bree.” The man’s voice was oddly familiar. I was sure I had heard it before. I just couldn’t pinpoint where.

“The room is brightly lit, I do not want to damage your eyes after the darkness.” The voice was kindly. A gentlemanly twang to it. Screwing my eyes closed I felt firm hands slide the hood from my face.

“There now, isn’t that better?”

It hit me then. Where I knew his voice. “Your holiness?”

Laughter filled my ears as I slowly blinked my eyes open. “Ah, so you do remember me then? It has been years since we met.”

I let my eyes fall on him. Raising my head I scanned my body. I was secured to what looked like an examination table by thick leather straps.

“Of course… why am I tied down?”

He stepped closer to the table and I fell back so I could stare up at him.

“Why do you stink of another’s Alphas release Bree? When you were promised to me? Has your father double-crossed me?” There was something terrifying in the softness of his voice.

“I ….”

He slid one cool finger down my cheek. And my body reacted to his presence. Not as violently as it had when Kaelan touched me. But it was there. “You are going into heat Bree. I need to see if you are still worthy of me. Are you untouched Bree?” The fingers smoothing down my skin were gentle. “Or does your body belong to the Outlaw?”

I opened my mouth to speak but no words would come out.

He laughed. “Ah I see, maybe it was you that betrayed me then. I can see the lust in your eyes when I say his name. But know this, if I find you are still untouched then I will claim you. I will claim you in front of the whole city if need be.”
