“Try,” she breathed, a mischievous tone to her voice.
I released my hidden wings, enjoying the freedom of movement and flaring them outward.
Slipping my fingers along her jeans waistband, I carefully tugged them down, revealing lacy pink underwear.
She bunched the sheets into her fists, and her ragged breathing increased.
“You are...” I jerked the pants away then propped myself onto an arm and unbuttoned her blouse, letting it fall open to reveal a matching bra. “Divine, Phoebe. You’re the most perfect being I’ve ever encountered.”
She bit her bottom lip. “I amnotperfect.” Hesitantly, she reached out a hand and stroked my cheek. “No one is perfect, not even angels. I think all of us—Nephilim, Human, and Angel—could have more potential if we’d learn to work together instead of tearing each other apart.”
“I don’t care about the others, but you’re perfect for me. If it hadn’t been for your belief I could be saved, I’d still be lost in the dark, unfeeling and uncaring about anyone or anything except payback. My soul forever trapped in Hell with my father.”
I wonder what Lucian is doing right now.
I’d heard nothing from him since he’d sent us back last week, but I knew it would only be a matter of time before he tried to sink his claws into me again. He couldn’t help his nature. He was called the devil for a reason.
“Then let me show you how to fully live in the light, Cain, with pleasure and love requiring nothing in demand.”
She rose onto her elbows then unhooked her bra, tossing it to the floor.
“I want you, Phoebe, all of you. What I said that night on the patio still holds true, though.”
Her lovely pink hair spread out across my pillow like a burning halo. “What are you talking about?”
“If you give yourself to me in this way, then you are mine, and mine alone.”
She laughed, the sound low.
I stiffened. “You think it is funny?”
“No, I thinkyou’refunny. Do you really think I’m the type of girl to sleep around?”
I draped my body over hers, savoring the warm, silky flesh touching mine, then lowered my mouth to her breast, giving it a little nip.
Gasping, she dug her hands into my hair.
“I think you’re the girl who is going to marry me.” I swirled my tongue across her sweet flesh then moved my mouth to her throat. “After you graduate, though.”
She let out a small moan as I placed tiny kisses along her flesh, causing goose bumps to rise.
“But that’s almost two years away, Cain. Are you okay with waiting so long?”
“Precious.” I moved my face to hers, placing a hand along her jaw. “I’ve waited for eternity for someone like you. Two years is a drop of water in the endless ocean of time.”
“Then, if that’s your marriage proposal, I accept.” Nodding, she moved her gaze to my face then lazily glanced lower, a pleased smile tilting her lips. “I love you, Cain.”
Unable to hold back my elation and desire, I claimed her mouth with a passionate kiss as I positioned myself over her naked body, barely able to control the need within to mark her as mine forever. “I can only hope to always be worthy of your love.”
In response, she dug her nails into my shoulders.
Carefully, I settled myself between her legs, groaning with the sensation of finally becoming one with the other half of my heart.
“I’ll settle for pleasure tonight.” Giving me a secret grin, Phoebe’s amusement fell away to be replaced by pleasure.
Clutching her soft body to mine, I worshipped her as I’d worshipped none before, with my mouth, my body, and my soul.
As Phoebe and I found our rhythm, I smiled against her throat and murmured, “I might be an angel, but I’m about to claim you like a demon.”
And with that, I gave her a wicked grin and drove myself so deep I imagined our souls mingling together.
Not only had she broken my curse, but she’d given me the desire and purpose to break my old prison of hate and vengeance. Because she’d believed and trusted in me, even when I didn’t believe in anything, she’d led me to forgive not just those who’d wronged me, but myself.
She cried out with release, her limbs shaking, tears streaming from her eyes, a slow smile tugging at a corner of her mouth, revealing a dimple.
Cleansed by her love and a power higher than me, I would embrace my new truth and find those lost to the light, those who’d never known love, those who—similar to me—deserved another chance.
I gave myself permission to let go and found my own version of Heaven in the arms of a precious girl who’d dared to care.
